Facebook announced yesterday afternoon that they are rolling out their new profiles. As of now, you can choose to update your profile to the one, or wait for a bit till they make you do it. This is one of a number of changes going on with Facebook interfaces lately that make the system easier to use, more manageable and customizable, as well makes it much quicker to search for specific things and people.
The key changes to your profile page are a new introduction at the top that gives a quick view of your name, where you live, who you are involved with and related to, your birthday, any languages you speak, and your hometown. Right under this little intro of info, there are a few of the most recent pictures you've been tagged in.
You can also highlight the people that are most important to you. You'll be able to create new groups or use existing lists, if you made any, which will let all your friends know more about that area of your life. You'll be able to put more information on projects, interests, etc. which will be represented by images, supposedly making the overall visual image more appealing.
I decided to go ahead and leap into the new profile. Here's a walk-through of the change and the tour they give you to help you customize your profile.
The first step is to go to www.facebook.com/about/profile/ and in the upper right hand corner there will be a button labelled 'Upgrade to the New Profile'. Click that and you're on your way.
The link will automatically redirect you to your new profile page, and on that page you'll see the introduction at the top that I mentioned earlier. There will also be a 'Take a Tour' link. The first page of the tour is where you'll learn about the visual changes to organization on your profile page. You'll learn that you can hide any of the photos showing by clicking the x when you hover over that particular picture. That way you do have control of which of your tagged photos is showing when people view your profile. It's important to note that the changes do not affect your privacy settings, so if your pics aren't approved for anyone except friends to see, that hasn't changed. Navigation to your wall, info page, photos, etc. is now located underneath your picture, on the left hand side rather than tabs at the top.
You can also share more information about your experiences with education and work. You'll be able to add individual projects, classes, and other experiences by clicking the edit link on your Education and Work section of your profile. You'll be able to include anyone on your friends list that was involved, also!
Once this tour is over, you'll click 'Update Profile' to complete changing to the new profile page.
It's important to note that Facebook intends to have everyone switched over to the new profile by January, so if you want to have a look around before it is suddenly done, you should go ahead and migrate yourself.
