Air Berlin joins the IGLTA, the carrier is great way to get to the Gay Games

Air Berlin has announced on Friday, July 2, that it has joined the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association.

Air Berlin is the second largest carrier in Germany. Lufthansa is the largest.

The airline says it joined IGLTA “in support of this important niche group of affluent travelers.”

IGLTA connects and educates businesses in LGBT tourism. They were founded in the early 1980s by gay and lesbian travel agents who wanted to increase LGBT travel across the world. Today, they have member businesses in 70+ countries on all six inhabited continents.

Air Berlin is recognized for its award-winning service and great value-oriented price structure. The airline offers easy access to over 150 destinations in 40 countries worldwide, with 23 departure and destination airports within Germany. The airline operates hubs in Berlin-Tegel, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg and Palma de Mallorca. The route network is undergoing constant expansion.

Air Berlin currently operates out of 6 gateways in North America including New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Ft Myers in the U.S. and Vancouver, Canada.

On May 12, Air Berlin launched its inaugural flight from Düsseldorf to San Francisco, operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft with a total capacity for 303 passengers.

By the way, if you are going to the Gay Games in Cologne on July 31, consider flying into Dusseldorf. It is just a 20-minute train ride from Cologne. You may also find more hotels rooms in Dusseldorf.

The new route gave Air Berlin its sixth nonstop service from Germany to North America, supplementing existing services to New York, Los Angeles, Fort Myers, Miami and Vancouver. The new service from Düsseldorf to San Francisco will operate Wednesdays and Fridays until October 22, 2010.

Passengers traveling with Air Berlin on the new San Francisco-Düsseldorf service can also take advantage of convenient connections via Düsseldorf to some of Europe’s premier cities such as Zurich, Vienna and London, not to mention six inter-Germany cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

On all Air Berlin flights passengers enjoy the Airline’s award-winning service with superior cuisine and on-board entertainment options. The Airbus 330-200 aircraft operating on the route to and from San Francisco offers a two-class configuration of 303 seats. In Business Class, there are 24 seats with passengers able to enjoy comfort and space offering a pitch of up to 54 inches.

With a 2-2-2 seat configuration, Business Class passengers are assured of either a window or aisle seat and plenty of space.

Air Berlin currently operates a modern fleet of 152 aircraft flying to more than 150 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Caribbean, Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America.
