Matthew Shepard
Why did Matthew Shepard's murder get so much attention, when other murders in the community, including gay people of color, trans people, and other communities that are marginalized even within the GLBT community, do not?
Cathy Renna explains at 365.com as we remember Shepard 10 years after his murder.

Drew, here's the link to another story from Longmont about Matthew Shepard. Our school district superintendent was friends with his family and was on the front page today.

I think Matthew's murder got so much attention is because his parents went public with it and started a foundation whereas most people chose to keep personal tragedies private. Matthew was an activist and I commend his parents for honoring his memory and hence making a difference. Sometimes enough is enough and the straw breaks the camel's back. Rosa Parks God knows was not the only person of color to be harassed. She just made such a statement that everyone took notice. It only takes one person's experience to start a movement. History has shown us that. Martin Luther King, Eva Peron, ect.
