Only a day after a jury returned a verdict of guilty in the murder of Angie Zapata it remains clear from comments such as the ones found above on a YouTube tribute to Zapata that transgendered people are often hated, misunderstood, and targeted for violence simply because of who they are.
You may not understand all of the issues involved with being transgendered. It may not make sense to you. You may not 'get it.' It doesn't matter.
Transgendered people are people and they deserve the same rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as anybody else.
We're all human beings.
Angie Zapata deserved to live.

Thank you for writing this. It's so sad it needs to be stated like this.
Angie deserved to live no matter what she did or didn't do. She had rights. For people saying that she deserved it are sad ignorant individuals, most are just machismo men who would say that.
I wonder if they would say the same thing about a man or woman who knew they had AIDS and gave it to their sexual partner, deserves to die too.
We should all put ourselves in other people's shoes. What if it were my child ?
Transgender people are often targets just for breathing and as happy as I am that the law worked in this case I would rather have Angie back then a legal victory.
Yes there are people who want to kill us so we live with that threat over our head every day.

All I can say, from reading some of the comments around the net and newspapers just proves that we need hate crime legislation!

i am a transgendered women in oklahoma, while visiting california, i was raped and beaten and left for dead handcuffed in a hotel room. i can strongly say that some people dont care about human rights or compassion - these people feel that by killing someone because of who they are is justified. to that i thank the grand state of colorado for standing up and saying we had enough by putting people who use hate crimes as an excuse behind bars where they belong. so the good people of this world can live a safe and happy life...
I do think murder is wrong but I do believe if you're transgender and you are seeking out straight men, you're just asking for it, and I think that should be a crime...so I'm undecided about how I feel about the whole thing.
