Denver artist responds to gay marriage controversy with "bright bold joy"

Denver Gay Culture Examiner
Amidst the current controversy surrounding gay marriage, one Denver artist is choosing to respond to the intolerance facing same-sex couples with his unique brand of “bright, bold, joy.”
Local gay artist
Dean McCready is featuring his
Gratitude Together series of original oil paintings and giclées prints at
Geez Louise Coffee House, located at 4924 E. Colfax Ave. McCready’s show opens Friday April 10 and includes work that depicts gay couples in a positive light. While a lot of homosexual art is associated with provocative sexual imagery (think Robert Mapplethorpe), McCready’s paintings utilize energetic colors and an expressive approach to translate the strength of couples in same-sex relationships. “I want to show empowering images of gay people as normal, caring individuals,” McCready explained.
McCready’s philanthropy and vibrant portrayal of the GLBT community’s resilience is centered on a sense of gratitude. The recurring themes of “bright, bold, joy” that radiate from his work serve as a beacon of inclusivity and shared hope during a time of dark opposition.
Gratitude Together will be on display at Geez Louise Coffee House during April and May. 10% of all art sales will be donated to
The Other Side Arts, a local non-profit community arts organization.
