Another good magazine bites the dust: Time Inc. folds Cottage Living

Cottage Living's appeal attracted
readers--but was less successful with
advertisers.

Although Cottage Living was primarily a shelter magazine, it regularly featured inspiring and affordable gardens and plants. I say featured because there will be no more Cottage Living magazine. Time, Inc., the parent company and publisher of Southern Living and Coastal Living, is folding the magazine. The November/December issue currently on news stands will be the publication's last.

Cottage Living was launched four years ago to celebrate a charming but modest lifestyle. The publication attracted about a million readers and was named AdWeed's Startup of the Year in 2005.

But advertisers never really supported the magazine--and that's where magazines must make money. Cottage Living is just part of a major restructuring at Time that could mean the loss of 600 jobs.

This has been a tough year for magazine publishers and garden magazines have been particularly hard hit. House & Garden and O at Home also bit the dust.

The magazine says that readers with subscriptions to the magazine will be receiving refunds within the next three to four weeks. For questions about your subscription or your refund, you can call 800/297-1630 or email subsvcs@cottageliving.customersvc.com.

Oh no! I loved that magazine and the special issue they put out a while ago on cottage gardens. I am totally bummed about this.

I just wrote about giving gardeners magazine subscriptions for Christmas. Maybe we can save some other gardening magazines.

Oh wow, I'm SO sad about this! This is one of my favorite publications. :( At least there is still Country Living, which is close...
