Xmas Amaryllis gift blooming in January Photo by Judy Holly
Order or buy bulbs now for forcing and growing indoors during the winter months.
Some flowering bulb plants that respond well to pre-chilling and forcing are Amaryllis, Narcissus, Tulips, Hyacinths and Crocus. These bulbs can be grown in special vases or pots with only stones and water or in potting media with good drainage.
Forcing is the practice of artificially cooling and heating bulbs, plants, soil or air temperatures to get a plant to grow and flower at a different season than its natural timing. Pre-chilling and forcing with heat is often used to produce plants with flowers that can be enjoyed indoors, timed for specific Holidays or to give as gifts.
Some bulbs are available during the holidays prepackaged to give as gifts so that the person who receives the gift only needs to unwrap it, add a little water and watch it grow.
