With New Year's Eve around the corner, parties of all types are being planned. In celebration of the New Year, it's inevitable with many partygoers that the blender will be buzzing, shakers shaking and at midnight, corks popping! And the party animals will be rounding up everyone to play their favorite drinking games.

The Webtender website has a list of games on their "Drinking Games" page. Another good website to use as a drinking game resource is DrinkingGames.com. In the Drinking Games.com site, a number can be entered to sort games according to the number of players. As well, there are many board games that would be hilarious if played after a few margaritas.

Quarters - A favorite drinking game!

Probably the most popular drinking game out at a bar is quarters. The game is played by positioning a glass opposite a player who tries to bounce a quarter into the glass. If he succeeds, the other players drink. If he misses, he drinks. There are variations on the Webtender site.

BullshXX - Where drinkers put their bluffing skills to use!

Deal out an entire deck of cards to players evenly. Starting, with Aces, each player plays their Aces on the stack, face down. Since not everyone really has an Ace, some will bluff. Players can accuse another player of lying by saying "BullshXX", but if they are wrong, they drink AND pick up the entire stack of played cards. Then the play moves to the next card, and play continues until a player has played all their cards.

Indian Poker - Drinking card game that is played blind!

Deal every player a card and place the rest of the deck face down in the center. Without looking at the card, each player holds up his card to his forehead so that the other players can see it. Each player has the option of keeping their card (Remember, they have no idea what it is) or taking a drink, discarding it and drawing a new one. Highest card wins the hand.

Beer Pong - A Drinking team game

This game is a fun team game played with beer glasses and ping pong balls. Check out the "How to Play Beer Pong" for the best visual instructions for playing the game.

Board-type games that make good drinking games

Almost any game that requires activity or skills makes for a fun drinking game.  Take a favorite from the game cabinet and add a few drinking rules. Voila! You've got a party drinking game. Some examples:

  • Jenga - It's hard enough to build that tower sober!  Mark each piece with a drinking activity and it becomes chaos!
  • Qwelf - The crazy activities in Qwelf make it a fun group drinking game. (It's hilarious even without alcohol!)
  • Parchesi (Beerchesi) - Play the game according to its ages old rules, but if you get sent back or can't move, take a drink!
  • Monopoly (Beeropoly) - Play the standard game without money, using sips of alcohol in payment of money due.

Order a drinking game from Amazon!

For new game ideas, check out Amazon.com. Amazon has a host of drinking games perfect for a party group, such as Utterly Outrageous Drinking Games, Big Bad Ass Drinking Games,  or even the Complete Book of Beer Drinking Games.

Whatever game the group is playing at this New Year's Eve party, it's important to remember that safety should always be a consideration when alcohol is involved. Make sure guests are accompanied by a designated driver or that another responsible party plan is in place prior to pouring the shots.  If the plan falls apart, be sure to call friends a cab or take advantage of AAA's Tipsy Tow service to help them get home with their car in tow safely!

Celebrate bringing in the New Year with friends, a fun drinking game, and a safe ride home.  Then, help make 2010 the start of the best decade ever!
