Want to become a game developer? Southern Methodist University (SMU) might be your ticket into a carreer in game development. Based in Dallas, TX, SMU's Guildhall is a video game education program that is getting national attention with game studios. SMU offers a Master's degree and a graduate Professional Certificate of Interactive Technology in Video Game Development, with specializations in art creation, level design, and software development.
The SMU Career Fair will be visited by an impressive list of studios and publishers, including Activision, America's Army, BioWare, Blizzard Entertainment, Bonfire Studios, Budcat Creations, Controlled Chaos Media, Disney Interactive, Edge of Reality, LucasArts, Insomniac, KingsIsle, Obsidian Entertainment, TimeGate Studios, Total Immersion, Volition, and ZeniMax Media Inc.
Dallas's gaming industry might not shine quite as bright these days, but SMU's program is well respected because of the number of students that have gone on to work at major studios. Since its inception, the program has graduated over 300 students who are now working at more than 80 different game studios around the world.
"Interest in our graduating students is definitely up from last may," said Dr. Peter Raad, executive director of The Guildhall at SMU. "This is our eleventh graduating class since we began the program in 2003 and job prospects for these students look good." On SMU's success, Raad added, "We are extremely fortunate to have such a large footprint in the industry with our alumni working at most of the top studios in the world. Our graduates provide a strong statement about the quality of our program and how it prepares them for their careers."
