Do NCAA Football 10 microtransactions let people pay to win?

NCAA Football 10 asks you to pay for a competitive advantage
This guy isn't happy.

Microtransactions are all the rage in the gaming industry, from downloadable content like mini-expansions to fees for items, xp bonuses or to unlock small features. But has EA gone too far by including microtransactions in NCAA Football 10 and allowing them to give boosts to online play?

I don't mind downloadable content, like new maps for Call of Duty: World at War or new songs for Rock Band 2. I don't mind free-to-play games using a microtransaction model to make money. But I've always disliked microtransactions or additional fees to unlock basic features. In fact, I think that is one thing that dragged Hellgate: London under -- the idea that people would need to pay them money each month just to get basic features like extra character slots.

And now we are paying for online cheat codes?

NCAA Football 2010 includes the ability to purchase "dynasty accelerators" that will not only boost your ability to recruit in single player mode, but also provide boosts in online play. The online dynasty mode was one of the most anticipated features of the 2009 version of the game, and apparently EA took notice and decided to use it to squeeze out as much green as needed.

In dynasty mode, recruiting can be key to building a great team. With paid dynasty accelerators, players can purchase additional pipeline states, recruiting advisors and school pitches improvements. Additional accelerators that go beyond recruiting include coaching seminar and maximum player training.

Maximum player training? So not only can people purchase better recruiting, but their players will actually be better?

And it gets worst. There seems to be no way to disable these accelerators for online dynasties. There is no "turn off dynasty accelerators" option when setting up a new online dynasty, so even if someone just wanted to use them in offline play, it will effect their online play. I'm not even sure if they will display anywhere in the game -- so someone may very well be able to use them without anyone knowing.

I've seen some stupid moves by game companies, but having people pay for a competitive advantage online tops the list. It's bad enough that they billed Erin Andrews in a new mode of gameplay which turned out to be a renamed campus legend. But charging for cheat codes? Really?

Update:  With the first patch of the game, EA Sports put in the ability to turn off dynasty accelerators in online dynasties.

I agree totally that there should be a way to turn them off while doing an online dynasty. It's unfortunate, but EA has found a way to make even more money on a product that they have a monopoly on. Since they own the license for NCAA football, if you want to play, you have to pay EA. They only way they will make they items free is if people stop paying for them, and since you can get a leg up on your online dynasty competition for $10, people will continue to pay for this service. I wouldn't be surprised if Madden has the same type of thing for evaluating college players before the draft, and developing players during the season. Sad, but true, I just hope other company's that produce sports games do not follow in EA's footsteps.

AMEN!!! maybe three months down the road to charge for dlc that should have been included on the disc...maybe I can see that charge. But the same day!!! come on EA don't you get enough from the ad (nauseum) endorsments in the game. Now you have to rip another $12.50 after the $65.00 I just spent in the store!
Oh well, at least you haven't charged us for the alternate uniforms like Tiger Woods...50 times $1.50 is a lot of money! EA you are terrible tyrants and hopefully someone can knock you from your throne.

I'm in two online Dyn's, and somehow these extra pieces are not available to much. Seems like they can be turned off

Great article, Daniel. I would be interested if there any boosts when playing someone online randomly- not in dynasty mode. Also, are there online cheats for this game? It appears that some guys can actually see my plays- no, Im not running the same plays.

There is too much computer intervention in this game. EA Sports will simply not let you get away with dominating someone. I wish I had an EA Sports rep in the room with me sometimes.
