Sources close to both companies have confirmed that Google is in negotiations to buy Twitter. The discussion is still in the early stages and not being officially announced, nor has there been a dollar amount suggested. Twitter turned down Facebook's offer of half a billion dollars just a few months ago, so it's safe to assume that whatever the price ends up being, it will be a lot.
We'll have to call this a rumor until something more official is announced, but the only reason to leak this information (if it does turn out to be false) would be to incite Google's competitors (namely Microsoft) to start spending some money of their own. Sneaky, but that's how big business works (sometimes), so you never can tell with news this juicy.

Google will buy twitter for 1 billion dollars. Bill Gates won't give a sh!t since hes too busy with his malaria vaccine. The queen of England will sit in her house and do nothing and just let the billion of dollars she has in her bank just sit there. Nintendo will continue to release more crap pokemon games and make billions of dollars. Apple will continue to put apples on computers and sell them for $2000+. How do I get into this action?
