Is the Playstation Network catching up to the illustrious Xbox Live? What with the release of Killzone 2 (and with its substantial host of sales) and a mess of high-quality offerings available on the system, it seems as though this could be the case.
Along with the recent release of the poetic and beautiful game of intense artistic expression, Flower, the Playstation Network could be adding another popular independent developer game of decent renown and popularity in that of Braid. The recent acquisition of the former Xbox Live Arcade exclusive by Hothead Games has lead to its release on Mac and PC.
Since Hothead, the developers responsible for the the Penny Arcade Adventures, has put their games on the PS3, it doesn't seem too much of a stretch to assume from that point that Braid, too, will arrive in the fullness of time, as well as on Steam (it might already be there, for all I know).
This sort of thing makes me wonder if the PS3 may begin to undercut the 360 with its online service. With what may end up being a killer app in Killzone 2, Sony may end up getting the sheer numbers of online players into the Network for their gaming. In addition, success may compound with the potential of snatching a big exclusive from the arcade.
To be fair, the catalogue for the 360 arcade is pretty darn impressive, but it seems that, with the exception of Braid, they don't have quite as many creative exclusives as the PSN is gathering. Titles like fl0w, The Last Guy, the very strange Pain, Everyday Shooter (which did end up on Windows), the whole PixelJunk thing, the incredibly bizarre Noby Noby Boy, and a smattering of classics, not quite as many as the XBLA, mind you. They do, however, have several classic and popular PSOne games on there, such as Medieval, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, a few Crash Bandicoots, and several others.
Again, to be fair, XBLA has Castle Crashers, which is superb, and they have Marathon 2: Durandal (if they had the whole trilogy I'd be more impressed).
There is always Home, as well, but that seems to have gotten a lukewarm reception of relative disinterest. Whether or not it takes off is anyone's guess, but it does give the PSN another piece of individuality, at the very least.
Granted, XBox Live seems to have a pretty big lead in terms of utilization, and network downloadable games provide just one tiny facet of the services. Who knows? The PS3 has kicked off the year with a great start, and things are looking much better for the system that was, not too long ago, looking fairly forlorn. We'll see what happens in the near future.

NO PSN is not even close to XBL standards, it's going to take more than a couple nice games to do that.
I purchased a PS3 because everyone in the media keeps making it sound like PS3 is almost as good as 360.
I was extremely PO'ed when I got my PS3 home and found out that its not even close to 360, the Xbox 360 does everything better, especially LIVE.
360 is easy to use, packed with content, and has a intuitive design, PS3 works like it was made by a bunch of amateurs! I think the thing that upset me the most is the way I have to charge my controllers! Pure idiocy.
So stop with the false claims, your doing your readers a disservice.
Just to clarify on the controller gripe, Im talking about the short cable with the machine on. The PS3 deserves to fail for that reason alone, you would have to be a complete idiot to think it is a good idea to only be able to charge the controllers with the machine on.
But you cant just charge them while you play cuz the cable is too short, INSANE!

Okay, two things. I'd rather charge my PS3 controllers using my console than have to buy batteries or a recharger for my 360 controller. The PS3 controller is better for weight, has longer charge, and (in my opinion) is more comfortable. It's not great that the system has to be on to charge them, but I got a second controller (necessary for games like LBP anyway) and just swap them out when one gets low. Works great.
Second, PSN is FREE FOR ONLINE GAMING. I cannot stress this enough. Even if it's not as good as XBLA matchmaking, I'd still rather not have to pay to play online. Not a complicated decision.

As the proud owner of both systems and big on "online" life I can say that you are smoking some good stuff. I could only wish that psn would come close to xbl. It would give me 2 great places to play in, but they are not even close. I hope you got some $$$ from Sony for this article, but this is not a reality.
As a proud owner of both consoles and the PC, I can honestly say the gap between PSN and XBLA is closer that most people wish to think. 2008 was a great year for the PS3 and 2009 looks to be even better. Let me put my 2 cents in. Yes PSN is free and XBL is pay for play. Lets face it, XBL is better. I would pay for PSN if it was anything close to XBL, but I have to settle for the sorry free experience. There for a don't play my PS3 much. The reason why PSN is "catching up" on XBL because it is free, you can create as many accounts as email addresses you set up. Yes, you can do the same for XBL, but why? It cost to start a new XBL account. Hence more PSN accounts. I have 4 PSN accounts and 1 XBL live account. I could start a new XBL acount, but it is seen as a copout to cap leveling in certian games. PSN is not user friendly, heck they just got ingame XMB access in 2008. Have you tried to find your friends when they come online? That is a task, and you might not know they are online if you don't notice the little pop up in the upper right corner because there is no sound indicator. Sony should revamp PSN and model it after XBL or something like it. Also, a third penny; the rumored price drop for the PS3 is a good idea.

Psn is great. Xbla may have more downloadable games, but the quality is not that great. Almost most every psn game is great. I have no problems with psn, it works great, and it is free. There is a bunch of jerks on live, you get called a N****R, F#G, every two seconds.

That is hilarious! Yes, it has ingame text messaging, but you have to quit to voice or chat with someone. I have never seen a party option, unless you count people that are in your game with you, lol. With PSN you can not ingame /cross game communicate with your friends. I could be watching a TV show I downloaded and my friends playing various other games, and we can still talk, laugh and text. I could be the middle of a horde in Gears 2, and still chat like there are sitting next to me. I can also see EXACTLY what my friends are doing. If the are in campaign on a certian game, I can where they are at. it doesnt show "CALL of Duty 4" like PSN, It shows: "online playing CoD 4 team deathmatch" Or "playing Halo 3 campaign The Ark on normal". Evan the gamercards look generic on PSN. There is no Bio, can't view your friends' friends. PSN is a joke, well unless they added all that stuff I just mention within last month and a half. That is the last time I was on my PS3.

After reading these comments its clear to me...I am glad I own a PS3. If i had to deal with these name calling 360 kids who haven't even tried psn (they talk bs), I wouldn't log in ever. I am 30 years old, the PSN community is a mature community, why? The system cost more, it offers way more features in the hardware and people that are older with jobs who did their homework can afford one. I am not going to go into all the benefits of ps3 as i would be writing for an hour! But I will say the person who says ps3 has no friends list is obviously never played on a ps3. The only thing ps3 lacks over xbl is cross game chat, (you can do in game xmb text chat and voice chat) But on ps3 you can do 8 person video chat/confrencing and it works with remote play on your psp so you could be at work and chat with your friends over your psp that is hooked up to your ps3. You could access the store and play certian ps3 games, all ps1 games, and watch movies, music, photos browse the net on the go via remote play. Even set up a spy cam to watch your house while you are gone. You don't need netflix on ps3, we got a video store, and a web browser where you can watch hulu and all the other free tv sites..download porn, no problem..lol... The ps3 lets you put your own files on the removable standard laptop hard-drive it uses. You can now buy a .5 terrabyte (500mb) hard-drive for $100 for the ps3, while the 120mb will cost you the same price for xbox(as you have to buy proprietary). PS3 has trophies which are better then acheivments as you get bronze, silver, gold and platinum trophies which creates value for the trophies, you rank up not in score but in level. It's almost like playing an rpg inside your ps3's ui. There is life with playstation/folding at home app which is a globe that has 2 channels both on a rotatable 3d globe. One shows you the weather and news for cities across the world, with news articles that will pop-up from the globe. the other chanell is folding at home which lets you fight cancer, aids, hep, ms, etc... by folding protien dna cells over the connected ps3 network, it displays the globe at night and shows glowing dots for each ps3 connected to the network, each ps3 cell processor interconnects to the whole and works togeather to create a global super computer of ps3's creating the most powerful folding at home (raw processing power) of number crunching...so when you are not using your ps3 you can save the world (and you can listen to your music while doing it) These are just a few of the features of psn...like i said it doesn't have cross game voice chat(just cross game text) but who cares. I guess if you are 13 you mite, I don't. Even M$ recognized the greatness of Killzone2 this week! The best looking, sounding, smart ai, and feeling console game ever...need i say more. The xbox trolls have been on the prowl all week invading ps3 forums and blogs playing the defense card as they no there console is looking very bad in this new year of ps3's lineup. The xbox only has bribed dlc it only has 2 first party developers while Sony has 20+ and nintendo around 12. People are paying for live for a service with advertisments and nickel and dime avatars, themes and a download size cap for games. Plus psn uses dedicated servers with no advertisments. Xbox only uses peer to peer, so you are payin money on xbox to play games online you already bought and without ms servers so you are playing with someone else hosting the game on the xbox..really pseople need to understand you are getting ripped off with xbox! PSN has full product releases on psn like wipeout hd, warhawk, socom , and burnout paradise. All over 3gb in size..xbox download size limit is 300meg, with no free content(ms must get a slice of every pie) Sony offers free dlc almost weekly. The community is great and instead of trolling forums we will play our system and promote it not act like little babies when a pro-psn article comes out. Some of these xbots even go so far to say they own a ps3 but then they will bash it and say they never play it etc....really these kids don't own one, they really have the money to buy all that equipment and just let one collect dust...doubtful...xbox people are in defense mode. It's a sign of the times, ps3 is just starting it's 3rd year, x360 is in its 4th year and they have nothing that comes close to the greatness of ps3 exclusives like killzone2!

I am 36, and I own both. Matter of fact I have two each; 360 and PS3 in my sons room, and a 360 in my bedroom and a PS3 in the den. I prefer the 360 for overall gameplay, the PS3 is for Bluray use only. PSN has 13 yr old kids on it as well. Try playing Call of Duty 4 or World at War without them calling everyone noobs. Oh, thats right it is hard to hear other people because it sounds like there talking through tin cans with strings attached to each end. I don't know why, they just sound that way. Also, lag is lag. PSN has it and XBL has it, so all that server talk is null. Anyway, It is the same no matter what service you play on, kids are kids. Oh, didn't Killzone 2 get outsold by Streetfighter for PS3?....Yep, it sure did. So, that can't be the savior that PS3 fanboys have been waiting for.

XBL is the one with dedicated servers Xbox Live exclusive servers are based in Seattle, Washington while using some of Microsoft's other servers in Quincy and Yakima, Washington. look it up. also you can download games larger than what you say along with original xbox games like GTA:SA which is huge (6gig)! we also get free content alot more than PSN i just downloaded 13 themes for each of the month containing the SI swimsuit models. hulu sucks balls on a tv, you know it and i know it. XBL also has downloadable movies but with netflix you get unlimited HD movies and HD TV shows!!! @me I completely believe where your coming from but I feel that your just another person on 360 defense somethings you may have said are true but your wrong at most, Yes you guys do have cross in-game chat(or maybe just anywhere). That doesn't mean much when PS3 is starting to almost come out with 45% of exclusive titles. It is very important to me to have many features the 360 and it's xbl offers. I do also understand that Sony is a hardware company and Microsoft is a "SOFTWARE" company. Therefoe they have the experience to make rich and robust online experiences. Sony doesn't know anything about software. I bet if Apple were to join with Sony you would be seeing more features on the PS3 than the Xbox 360.
Netflix is only available in the US. For the rest of the world, most xbox users that is all we got was gay avatars and now they are taking the option of having blades. L4D is the best game on the xbox but unless youre poor you got the PC version for the user mods. Killzone looks better than Crysis though.

(to you "me")lets say we both download a game or a movie, and if it finish its download, then we start to to play or watch the movie.. and by sum reason both of our internet drops or a storm messes it up.. you wont be able to play none of your games or watch ne of your videos on xbox bcuz u pay to play online.. so while your waiting to play or watch whut u downloaded.. im playing it or watching it offline with no internet, bcuz sony understands when you actually buy sumthing, you own it and can play or watch it online or offline.. thats not it, you say you have all these downloads in your store and blah blah blah.. f*** ur gta exclusive lol we got an exclusive to its called siren, blood curse 10 gigs we got alot seriously i dont see how u say u have knowledge on all systems, can xbox do this, i bought watchmen on my friends account, we both downloaded it with only one purchase we both have it and can give it to 3 other ppl, its called ps3 game sharing, its the future wake up.. i think ur the lil kid bcuz u don't understand money.. all xbox ppl have to buy something individual, as to were ps3 ppl,(real friends not online friends) can all put in money on a card and buy it and all download it, tht guys gonna diss on my spelling and bullshit but i dont care, yall know why, whn ever a ps3 fan shuts up a RUDE PUNK CLOSED MINDED BRAIN WASHED xbox 360 fan* they always, ALWAYS talk sh!t about something else.. so whut do you have to say about tht.. i havent even mentioned to the psp or other devises the ps3 can copy files on it.. i can shut up a xbox 360 guy all day long, i got so much knowledge on the ps3 tht only a ps3 owner/player would understand..
