It is fairly easy to hustle a small dice game without cheating in any way. While using loaded dice is definitely cheating and dice manipulation, depending who you talk to, is at least a grey area, there are a few simple principles that will allow you to beat any small scale dice game without using any techniques which might be considered underhanded or take practice to master.
1) Understand the game. Any dice game, whether street craps or c-lo operates according to small swings in luck. One player may win five rolls in a row or 10 of 15 throws, but over the long run the luck evens out. A player simply needs to put him or herself into a position where a run of luck will take everyone else’s money and break the game.
2) Have the biggest bankroll. It is absolutely essential to have significantly more money than all the other players combined. This is exactly how casinos stay in business. A good rule of thumb for bankroll safety in a small time dice game is 8-10x the rest of the table. This way when the stakes increase, as they usually do, a hustler can withstand a run of bad luck.
3) Make the game fun. Superstition plays a large role in a game of dice and players often indulge in the strangest behavior. They talk to the dice, blow on them, and even kiss them. They rub the playing surface and give various rolls rhyming names and personalities. A hustler having fun with superstition leads by experienced example. No one complains too much about a small loss if the loss was entertaining. Again, this is the reason that casinos exist.
How it typically all works: Bobby “Been Around the” Block is hanging out with three friends when they decide to kill some time with a game of dice. His friends have $10 each and decide to play for $1 a roll. This is fine because Bobby Block is a gambler and always keeps plenty of money on hand. All the friends have a great time for an hour or so as they each have runs of luck and make a few great improbable throws. Bobby shows them all how to make elaborate monkey sounds when calling for a certain number and explains how 4s aren’t to be trusted because they are the “whores” of the dice world. Eventually, friend X’s luck runs the best; he wins some of Bobby’s money and knocks the other two out of the game. This is the moment where the magic happens! Bobby suggests to X that they increase the stakes. X agrees for a number of reasons: he is up about $30, playing with won money, wants to keep playing and to give his friend a chance to get even, and he is basically greedy. So they start throwing for $5 a roll. The game grows even more fun and each roll more intense. Initially, X wins even more money, but eventually Bobby weathers the bad luck and gets hot. When he finally drops an incredible double up roll and takes all the money, his friends all tell him how lucky he is. The friends all decide to go for drinks, and because he is a nice guy, Bobby buys the first round from his $30 profit. Of course, sometimes (in this situation, 1 in 4) Bobby starts with a hot hand and the stakes never have a chance to increase, but who complains when that happens?
