Apple buys ad company Quattro Wireless

Quattro Wireless blogged on its own Web site today about its new owners, Apple Inc.

"We are thrilled to let you know that Apple has acquired Quattro," wrote Quattro co-founder and CEO Andy Miller, although he signed his note "vice president of mobile wireless for Apple."

Quattro runs an advertising network that focuses on selling ads viewed on mobile devices, such as smartphones. Mobile is seen as the new frontier for advertising revenue as consumers increasingly view digital content on mobile devices rather than personal computers.

Google made a similar move when it announced the proposed acquisition of AdMob in November for $750 million. Google made its own push into mobile with the development of the Android operating system for smartphones and the expected introduction today of Google's own branded smartphone, the Nexus One.

Google acknowledged Dec. 23, 2009, that the Federal Trade Commission has made inquiries about the AdMob acquisition, given Google's dominance in the search-based advertising market. "We don't see any regulatory issues with this deal," Paul Feng, Google's group product manager, blogged at the time.

All Things Digital, the Web site owned by the same News Corp. that owns the Wall Street Journal, reported Monday that Apple paid $275 million for Quattro. Apple has not replied to a request for comment.

Miller wrote today: "We have built our business by enabling advertisers to reach the right consumers across the mobile web and in applications. We remain focused on delivering more engaging, relevant and useful ads to mobile devices, and improving the measurement and execution of digital campaigns. Together with Apple, we look forward to developing exciting new opportunities in the future that will benefit our customers."

Miller said that despite the acquisition by Apple, the company will continue to operate the Quattro Wireless network "across all devices and platforms."
