Look for the Pre to be supported by Verizon early in 2010.
While it certainly is debatable, Verizon always seems to get the best reviews out of all the service providers, which really isn’t saying much.
We all know how evil service providers can be.
So the news today should make both fans of Verizon and the Palm Pre happy. In a conference call today, Verizon boldly stated that they will be carrying the Pre in the early goings of next year as soon as Sprint’s exclusivity with the smartphone ends.
Of course, this comes after Sprint lashed out at Verizon after they made it known, in the time during its launch that they would definitely like to carry the Palm Pre. Basically they said that Verizon needed to back off with its assumptions that the exclusivity period was only six months.
Verizon obviously still believes this to be the case even if Sprint has given no definitive answers as to when the exclusivity ends other than saying that it runs through 2009.
Now there is apparently only one problem and it might be a big one. According to Pre Central, Verizon may start to provide service on the Pre; however the App Catalog that Palm is rolling out might not be included.
Why?
Verizon is apparently developing their own app store and it will be the only application store pre-loaded on Verizon phones which could completely cripple the Pre if it ends up with the network.
We’ll see if they change that because it could really drive away people that want Verizon on their Pre.

Why would the store cripple the pre? I will still run old Palm apps right? I have the Treo and love all the free apps you can find online as well as a few handy pay apps like Butler and Ringo.
Unless the new Palm OS is locked down, I don't see any problems with apps being unavailable.
I appreciate the input CJ and I apologize for maybe being a bit vague.
What I mean by crippling is that Verizon is coming out with their own version of an App Store at some point, probably next year.
The crippling part comes in because the store would be moving away from supporting a specific device say the Apple App Store or the upcoming Pre Catalog and more in line with a store that supports all Verizon phones.
That essentially means that applications won't be phone specific and will probably suffer diminished quality as a result.
That is if they follow through. We'll see when we get there. Hopefully that made sense.
Thanks for reading!

I understand what he's saying about Verizon. I feel the same way. Verizon isnt as open as other carriers about not having control of what their customers can get on their phones behind their back.
But simplecj does have a point that since it is an open source smartphone it shouldnt be as restricted as say their regular standard sets that have their VZ os an gui's.
The big VZ has been pretty good with their line of smart phones as far as installing your own progs on though.
I just dont approve of their smartphone data plan. to rich for my blood.I've been a VZ cust for about 8yrs now and have only stuck to their non data plans because of price. My contract is up in a couple mos. and if Verizon can offer the Palm Pre at a similar plan price I'll stay even if I have to pay more for the phone. If not....Sprint here I come.
