The price is going to stay the same, for now.
A couple of weeks ago, Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick decided to engage Sony in the press, threatening to pull his company's support for the Playstation 3 unless the company dropped the price of the console.
If you missed the story, you can find it here.
Yesterday, Sony’s boss, Sir Howard Stringer, fired back in an interview with Reuters in which he seemed highly annoyed by people telling him that they need to drop the price of the PS3. He basically called Kotick out for playing games and making a lot of noise. He also stated that both companies were putting pressure on each other and that that was the nature of business.
In regards to the constant nagging about lowering the price of the Playstation 3, Stringer stated that the company would lose money on every Playstation they made.
Tell us something we didn’t know, Mr. Stringer.
Of course, he didn’t directly address Kotick by name, probably attempting to avoid a name-calling battle in the press, but if you read between the lines, he is saying that one, Kotick’s reasoning is flawed and two, the Playstation 3’s price is not going to be dropping any time soon, regardless of threats.
So, who is right here?
Honestly, Kotick went a little too far. The Playstation is expensive for a reason. It is more than just a gaming system like the Xbox 360 and the production costs justify the price tag of the console and because of this, it’s hard to justify Kotick’s threats.
Again, as Stringer is saying, it’s just pressure and that is how business works. While Sony might like to drop the price to bring in new customers, their hands are tied because of the price of the hardware. That is how it was designed and people are just going to have to deal with it.
Activision needs Sony and Sony doesn’t necessarily need Activision and Kotick’s shots over the bow aren’t going to make the price drop one penny.
So instead of trying to be Robin Hood, Kotick should focus on making better games.

In the past I purchased two PS2's both went up on me. I decided to up grade and buy a PS3, guess what?that went up on me also. my hard drive is mysteriuosly corrupted. I take ecellent care of everything I own and no else touches my system. Now I'm being charged $150 to fix it. I hardly think it's worth investing into a 40 GB system I paid $400 for. If I trade it in, It is only worth $60. It is going to be very hard for me to keep my faith in Sony's quality. So what do I do now?
