Sony announces new high-end wireless e-reader

Give a round of applause to the Reader Daily Edition.

Less than a month ago, Sony unveiled two new e-readers, the PRS-300 and the PRS-600, in their stable. Yesterday, they went ahead and introduced another one, this time including the sought after wireless capabilities the other two models lacked.

So, quickly, what’s so different about the Reader Daily Edition? And yes, that’s what they are calling it, quirky name, hard to tell if it will become catchy.

OK, some of the specifications that set it apart from everything else Sony.

Besides being Sony’s first e-reader with 3G wireless connectivity, it offers easy access to Sony’s online bookstore from anywhere, a 7-inch touch-screen that is able to function in both landscape and portrait mode, an expensive $399 price tag, and wireless provided by AT&T with no extra charges.

Basically you’re not going to find this sucker in the bargain bin, so if wireless is your thing, the price seems right, and you love e-books, this is definitely going to be something worth checking out. And while the PRS-300 and PRS-600 will debut very soon, the Reader Daily Edition will be coming out in December.

Actually, this might make a pretty good gift, if not for the crowded field of e-readers including the Kindles and iRex’s wireless e-reader.

Decisions will have to be made, so make sure you do research before you decide on which one fits your tastes.

Sony, with this release along with the entry level PRS-300, puts itself at war with the Kindles, especially because of its access to the free content over at Google Books. And hey, the Reader Daily Edition also has a touch-screen which should please a lot of you e-book fanatics out there.

Oh, and Sony also announced that its e-readers will now support library loans, meaning if the library near your house supports electronic books and lends them out, you can check them out for 21 days until they expire.

Their partnership with Overdrive.com will also allow for easier searching for supported libraries.

Pretty nifty.

We’ll see how these stack up against Amazon’s armada, iRex’s new product and Barnes and Noble/Plastic Logic’s reader coming out next year, but from the looks of things, the Reader Daily Edition appears to be a winner.
