If you've been interested in aerial photography but held back by that inconvenient airplane aspect, New York-based SkyShutter has the gadget for you.
The company's AeriCam is a remote-controlled model helicopter engineered to hold a video or still camera. The chopper can get up about 300 feet above the ground, which turns out to be plenty high to give a dramatic perspective on any landscape. (Check out the San Francisco images on the company's Web site.)
Operation is a two-person affair, with one person controlling the helicopter and the other manning the pan-tilt-swivel control that allows positioning of the camera via a live feedback monitor.
The camera mount alone costs $3,000, so we're not talking toy stuff here. And flying a model chopper is a tricky affair, so you'll want to put in a bit of practice before entrusting a camera to your skills.
