Motorola Droid X owners reporting volume issues

Verizon.

Well, this is certainly a new one to me but it apparently has been afflicting plenty of lucky Motorola Droid X owners out there. I say lucky because it has been extremely hard to find a Droid X both in stores and online.

If you were fortunate enough to order one yesterday, you should get your new handset no later than August 4th. If you ordered it today, it’s anyone’s guess as to when it will arrive. Just keep your fingers crossed.

Anyway, this isn’t the first issue we have heard about with the Droid X. First, owners griped about screen problems including intense banding. As recently as a few days ago, I’ve had people emailing me saying they are having screen problems. Luckily, Verizon is aware of the issue and says it has only affected a very, very, very minor portion of Droid X’s.

Secondly, Droid X users starting complaining about Wi-Fi issues that seemed to have been quelled by that Droid X OTA update released a short time ago. Then, Apple decided to post their Droid X antenna test on their smartphone antenna performance page pulling Motorola's new device into Antennagate.

For the record, I have not been able to reproduce the issue.

And now it appears there is another problem.

It seems Droid X owners have been experiencing problems with the handset's volume which could mean trouble with the external speaker. Specifically, the volume is extremely low even when the ringer is turned on or speakerphone is running.

So, that leads me to the obvious question. Are any of you out there with the Droid X having speaker problems?

Not exactly problems... the speaker is clearly not the loudest speakers out there. I just edited my ringtones to be louder and put them back on the device. Its no big deal... I have had phones with much lower ring tones in the past and I got use to them.

I had mine and right out of the box you could not hear calls. the speaker for using music and ring was fine but you could not hear calls talking. I had to return it no fix at the Verizon store. hopefully my new one whenever i get it works.

Not having any volume issues, but I am having reception issues. The reception keeps fluctuating between 1 and 4 bars where I should be getting a strong signal. The local Verizon manager showed me his DX had 4 bars constantly when mine had 3 bars, so that proved it. He ordered me a replacement. Great service, just hope my replacement works properly.

yes, incredibly low external speaker volume. when being carried on my hip in the official verizon holster, i never hear my ring tone (which i've boosted the volume on in sony sound forge) or the notification tone. i hope a fix comes soon; i'm tired of missing calls and taking 30 minutes to reply to texts :/

Yes. My droid x is to low when it comes to ringer and my alarm. I keep hearing that droid x has a great speaker but not on my end. I love the phone but this speaker kills it. Im glad my girlfriend has the original moto droid. If she didn't i would not make it to work on time. Can i get this fixed?

with my volume at halfway it is barely audible. i went to the local verizon store and tested the one they had on demo and it was the same. volume and notifications are really low. I work in a jail. Its loud. If i can't hear it i can't answer this. Hopefully an update will address the issue!!

I chose my own custom ringtone that sounds like it'll grab my attention so I had no issue with the ringtone. My Mom thinks the volume is a bit low with her ears, but for me, not much of an issue. Speaker phone wise, had my Mom use it in the NJ balloon festival with lots of people walking all over the area. She could still hear somehow.. Hahah... :D And you could hear the other person on the other line.

With the volume turmed up to 100% I still miss many calls. Listening to music in a car or in a room with a fan on is impossible. I love the DX, but this may force me to return it if a fix is not here soon.

I truthfully have not had one problem with my droid. It sounds awesome and it still has not even froze. The battery life only works through one day but that is my only complaint. I got it the day it came out and i have used it pretty heavily.

It's not real loud, but if you turn it up full blast, it's sufficient. Half way or less is barely audible. So, I generally leave the volume all the way up. I think part of it is the speaker placement as it's on the bottom back part which is flat. If you place it speaker side down on a hard surface like wood or tile, you can hear it fine as the sound reflects off the surface, but if you place it on softer fabric or leather, quite a bit of the sound is absorbed and it's not nearly as loud. I'm not complaining at all. I love my Droid X so far!!!

I have a droid x....got it on the day it came out, switched from AT&T actually!

    No problems with my droid...
No screen problems, volume problems, and certainly not any antenna issues!
The OTA update fixed my hotspot issue, I can connect my wifi only iPad now no problem...it's really great!

Yes, the droid x will change your life, it's as big as a cell phone should be, precut imho.

I've had mine since the day it came out, and the only issue i have with the phone is audio related. Call volume, ring volume, alarm volumes and alert volumes are all way way way to low, i have good hearing but its barely noticible unless in a quiet room. For some reason music plays much louder through the speaker than calls do. Also support for smart phone headstes like monster beats or zagg smartbuds is horrible, very buggy and often randomly dials my last call.... very annoying. Love the phone otherwise

I too love my Droid X.... although the volume could be better. there is always the android volume hack.... but you will need to Root (Jailbreak) your phone to do it. I heard it makes a huge difference... but not ready to Root yet...

The solution to your "volume" problems are the ringtone. Why hasnt anyone realized this? As soon as you change your ringer/alarm to anything other then "default" the issue is gone and the ringer is loud and clear. Also some have mentioned on the forums that turning off smart profile will fix it as well.

Have had the X since the first day...no problems whatsoever. I have read with great interest some of the problems and gripes about the phone. With the complexity and versatility of this phone, it's amazing it works at all. At least Verizon and Motorola step up to the plate quickly to solve any issues. Move over Apple, there's a new kid on the block....

I love my Droid X as well. No actual problems with it. HOWEVER, the volume is PUNY. I really hope they can come out with an OTA update to increase the ringer volume.

My only real complaint is: Ringer volume not loud enough, vibrate not strong enough.

    To Mr. FixIT:

What are you talking about? The issue is that the speaker just isn't loud enough period. Smart mode has nothing to do with it, and I've never used the default ringtone. I use a standard "adult" ring.

My first droidx had the banding issue so it went back within an hour of owning it. The replacement touch screen stops responding frequently and the ringer/notification volume is pathetic. I keep my phone in my purse's pocket where the speaker cannot be covered, have the ringer set to "noisy one" and on max and I still miss calls and text notifications. It's very frustrating!

Droid X is the best smartphone for the money today. Can't wait for FROYO! Sure, the volume could be better, and it would be nice if it had an equalizer, some subwoofers, and all kinds of other doodads. But I am extremely happy with the way it is.

I have had my Droid X since it was released. I love it except for the volume. The alarm isn't loud at all because of the speaker but when you hit the snooze, then it is loud. I downloaded alarm Klok and it is a little louder. I also got ProLauncher and so I can customize my dock bar and hit home to show me all 7 screens. I love my Droid with Launcher Pro

I have had no issues other than my battery the first day. The OTA update fixed it. Ordered my phone on the 16th got it 2 days later. My volume is fine no issues. Only wish I could use my own ring tone alert for notifications like sms messages. I was able to set ny own for calls. I love my Dx. I was an upgrade from the Storm.

Traded my HTC Incredible for the Droid X. Starting to wonder if that was a good move. The Incredible was flawless and well engineered. The X is starting to remind me of Windows Vista when it first came out = Don't have the bugs worked out but shipped anyhow. The volume sucks, my wifi doesn't freezes up even though it shows connected at full strength and the GPS is buggy.

Motorala needs to address more than the screen issue that they couldn't deny because of pictures. Step up to your responsibilities, the phone was advertized as a "Man's" phone...be a "Man's" company and get this thing right. You got the hardware right now fix the firmware!

The only problems that I have is with the volume. I have tried all different ringtones and nothing works. If the phone is in my case I cant hear the riger or alerts. The alarm clock volume is also bad. I have to use my old Blackberry Curve for my alarm in the morning.

I haven't had any of these volume issues with my Droid X and love the phone. The screen is so worth it. If anything I about leapt out of bed this morning because my alarm was so abrasive on the rooster setting I thought my apartment neighbor would wake up too!

From my Droid X experience so far, there are TWO volume problems with the ringer. First, the ringer volume sometimes adjusts to the lowest setting above mute, even though the volume indicator is max. The only cure is to power off and back on. Secondly, max volume is definitely too low. It also doesn't help that the ringer is on the back of the phone, so if you place it face up so you can see the screen, the ringer is blocked. It really should have been on the END or SIDE of the phone. Beyond the sound problems, battery life sucks compared to my blackberry. Not just from using apps or the screen. Talk time also eats the battery, as I found out today. May return it before my 30 days but I really like the features.
