8.2.1 - the death of iTunes syncing with Pre's.
Well, Pre users, the day that you were dreading has apparently arrived.
According to the people at Gizmodo, the days of syncing iTunes to your Pre has ended in relatively swift fashion. Apple has followed through on their threat to block this capability and if you missed it, here is what they said a month ago:
“Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.”
Soon afterwards, Palm responded:
“Palm's media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.”
And, Apple responded by updating iTunes to 8.2.1 which makes syncing impossible.
Palm has now responded, again, today saying:
“Palm's media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider.”
It’s like listening to the press conference before a UFC or a boxing fight.
So if you own a Pre, and you use iTunes with it, for your sake, do not update your iTunes 8.2.1.
8.2 works fine.
To sum it up, Apple, in a pretty candid move, has struck at the jugular of its opponent with little remorse. The news surely will drive Palm and Pre users up a wall and bring Apple users out of the woodwork to celebrate an apparent victory.
Can’t we all just get along?
