Is Apple preparing a Kindle-killer?

Oh, how the rumors swirl when it comes to Apple and new markets. For your convenience, I'll italcize the verified facts in the following scenario posited by PC Magazine:

Apple isn't all that interested in the netbook market. The company is working on a secret deal with Verizon, despite contracts guaranteeing iPhone exclusivity for AT&T. Thus the new Verizon-enabled device won't be a phone but a Web/media tablet -- basically an iPod Touch with a screen big enough to make reading comfortable.

It will be called an iPad and sell for around $700, although Verizon subsidies are likely. It may be ready to show the sweaty masses by June.

Instant loser is Amazon, whose revamped Kindle gets left on the dustheap of history. Possible winners include newspapers and other beleaguered members of the print publishing industry.

Ahh, deductive reasoning. What would writers on the Apple beat have to do without it?
