iPhone SMS bug could potentially hijack every iPhone in the world

Has your iPhone been hijacked lately?

Well, it looks like Apple is too busy rejecting great applications and letting in absolutely terrible ones to be bothered with fixing what appears to be a security flaw of epic proportions.

Ok, the first part is a little bit of an exaggeration, but the Google Voice app would have been awesome.

More on that in an article later today.

So according to Forbes via Gizmodo, there is a flaw on the iPhone that allows for it to be hacked via SMS. Once the hijacking has occurred, the bug can also access your contact list and start spreading it to everybody that you know. And then to everybody they know, and so on.

This sounds absolutely terrible.

Apparently your only warning is a single square character and after that, it's able to send invisible SMS bursts that allow for hackers to completely take over your phone.

The cybersecurity researchers who found this bug are going to be talking about it on Thursday at the Black Hat Conference and giving a demonstration.

So what can the bug do exactly besides send itself to your friends, colleagues and family with iPhones? For one it can dial numbers, it can visit websites, it can turn on the camera and microphone and most important, send SMS messages out to the world.

How can you prevent it?

Well, turn off your phone if you get that little one character SMS message. If you don’t, you are putting you and your contacts at risk.

The best part about this is?

That Apple was notified about this a month ago and still has done absolutely nothing to fix it.

Way to go.

Be careful people.

An Apple product specialist told me: The software update for the iPhone version 3.0.1 was released on Thursday (7/30/09)that secures your phone against this type of attack. You should plug into itunes and make sure you update to the current software version and you will be fine.
