HTC Desire headed to AT&T

It appears the HTC Desire is taking Android and the Nexus One to AT&T.

This could be big, very, very big for AT&T and for the people of San Francisco looking for an Android alternative for the iPhone that isn’t called the Motorola Backflip.

If you weren’t aware, the Backflip is going to be AT&T’s first Android phone and it will be released next month. Apparently, it will be joined by another phone that was recently introduced at the Mobile World Congress by HTC.

The Desire.

Yup, it appears as though the HTC Desire will be headed to the AT&T network which essentially means that the Nexus One is heading to the network under a different name. That definitely makes sense considering rumors had the Nexus One heading there at the beginning of the month.

That means that AT&T users will be getting a taste of the Sense UI as well. Also of note is the fact that some minor hardware changes to the HTC Desire might be made to the casing, color and finish. As far as a release date goes, it looks like May or June will be the when the handset makes an appearance on AT&T.

Obviously this is huge news for AT&T users, and there are plenty of them here in San Francisco, who wanted to get their hands on the Desire or the Nexus One. At this point, this is not confirmed by AT&T, but it looks to be pretty concrete.

So get excited.

If you’re looking for an AT&T phone here in the city, head here. If you want an HTC phone not called Desire, you can go here.

What about the fact that HTC said there were no plans to bring the Desire to the US anytime soon? They were quoted as saying that at the Mobile World Congress. Naturally, a reporter like yourself would have some sources to back up these claims. Let's see 'em.

See the word "appears" that has an underscore? That is called a HYPERLINK. It leads to his source. It's not hard to figure out Chris, if that's really your name.

    Chris,

Can you find that quote from HTC? Because their FCC filing from a month ago says otherwise...
