Google Earth update highlights the Darfur genocide in great detail

Hopefully more updates like this will be released for Google Earth.

This is actually pretty extraordinary, so let’s move away from the usual beat for a second and talk a little bit about this story that Tech Crunch broke yesterday.

It’s safe to say that Google is on the cutting edge of technology, from Android to Google Maps, they are right there on the forefront. Well, what if they used this technology along with their popularity to highlight a problem on a global scale?

You guessed it, they have.

A lot of you are probably familiar with Google Earth and how it works but if you are not, here is a link so you can dive in. Today, on their blog, Google announced that through a partnership with the United States Holocaust Museum Memorial and utilizing data from the U.S. State Departments Humanitarian Information Unit, Google Earth now shows more than 3,300 villages throughout the Darfur region.

3,300 villages that have been left in smoldering ruin or completely destroyed.

The updated Google Earth layer also includes almost 200 sites where you can witness before and after viewing of some of the villages to get a taste of the chaos and madness that has displaced more than 2.5 million people in Sudan.

Google’s aim is to raise awareness among average Americans and really, the average person on earth. The devastation and genocide covers an area the size of Texas and there are probably plenty of people out there that know nothing about what has transpired in Sudan.

And Google hopes to change that.

So if you are a Google Earth user or you want to check it out, you can find the content in the Global Awareness folder in the program or you can just download the new content here.

Please do so, because the more conscious we all are about this issue, the better. Google (and me) also encourage you to visit the U.S. Holocaust Museum Memorial website, which you can find here, and learn about how you can help the situation.
