BlackBerry Storm 2 video showcases its new features

Looks a little bit like this guy, huh?

There have been numerous rumors swirling around about RIM’s new BlackBerry Storm 2, otherwise known as BlackBerry Storm 9550. While there has been some speculation as to what might be included (please say Wi-Fi), there is now a 5 minute video on YouTube that apparently shows the people at CrackBerry messing around with the model.

While it may not be the final retail version of the phone, it does give some insight and a face to the product that could be launching next week, next month, next year, there really hasn’t been any sort of confirmation.

So from the video, you can determine a few things.

First and foremost, it still features a SurePress click screen; however, it apparently has improved from the first incarnation of the Storm. This might make some people reluctant, but you’d have to think that RIM has improved on the last screen’s failures.

Secondly, the screen apparently is less sensitive making for a better overall typing experience, another of the main gripes of the previous phone. The keyboards on other BlackBerry’s are phenomenal so hopefully RIM spent the time to improve this one, we’ll see.

The main BlackBerry buttons which include Menu, Call, Back and End are no longer separate but are actually featured prominently on the on-screen display. The model shown in the video is also running on BlackBerry OS 5.1 and it looks hauntingly similar to the original Storm’s which was extremely slow. So hopefully RIM irons that out too.

It also appears that the overall structure of the phone is a lot smaller than its predecessor. But again, who knows that the actual phone will consist of, both on the hardware and the software side once it’s released.

Enjoy the video.

Thank you for the briefing and the surprise news that Storm 2 will include WIFI. RIM's corporate survey of their customers listed WIFI support as the #1 feature request for ALL future RIM device releases.
