For all of you that braved the holidays and managed to defy the upcoming debut of the Apple iPad by securing a Barnes and Noble Nook for yourself or for someone else that you know, today is a big day for you.
Just like it was for owners of the Nexus One and the iPhone mere days ago.
Also, I’ve always kind of figured that the Nook went by a little bit unnoticed here in San Francisco mainly because there is only one B&N store and its way out near Fisherman’s Wharf. I could be wrong, but if you’re from San Francisco, and own one of these, I’d like to hear from you.
Moving on to the important stuff.
The reason today is huge is that the Nook is getting a firmware update to 1.2 and from the looks of things; it’s a decently nice one. Before you get the rundown of the new features, know this. Instead of waiting weeks for the OTA update for your Nook, please, go here and install in manually, it will save you a lot of time and trouble.
Ok, so here is what is being changed:
• Enhanced in-store seamless connectivity to enjoy free Wi-Fi, with More In Store content promotions exclusively for Nook owners
• Improved opening of eBooks and ePeriodicals
• Improved response to Reading Now and Settings buttons
• Current reading page and bookmarks on all eBooks are properly saved when you power your Nook off
• Eligible LendMe eBooks in your library have LendMe flags
• Easier navigation of daily subscriptions with issues rolled into one folder
• Improved "back" button functionality for navigating eBooks and ePeriodicals
• Personal files downloaded and displayed in My Documents can be sorted by author and title
• Overall system improvements and battery optimization.
See what I mean about the decently nice. Oh, and there are a couple of other UI bells and whistles like the LCD buttons being stylized different and a more responsive touchscreen. So Nook owners, if there actually are any in San Francisco, what are you waiting for?
