Service for the 3GS could get much better.
Get out the smelling salts.
Awake?
Good. Now, AT&T over the last couple of months has drawn the ire of its customers in a variety of ways. First it was chiefly responsible for the gimped version of the SlingPlayer Mobile application that was released to Apple’s App Store. It was blamed for the Google Voice application being rejected for iPhone users. It dropped some iPhone users with the release of OS 3.0. And probably most importantly, it has been criticized heavily by iPhone users because of its inability to handle Apple’s smartphone.
From dropped calls to lack of service, AT&T has been facing the wrath of many for quite awhile now. That’s not to say it wasn’t responsible for some good things like their partnership with Barnes and Noble or their changes to their Wi-Fi service, but honestly, the cons definitely have dwarfed the pros.
By a long shot.
However, finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
AT&T has unveiled a plan to introduce its 850 MHz spectrum plan to more cities around the United States. The improvements have already been placed in places like San Diego, Stockton and Las Vegas and this week, it finally hits Atlanta, Georgia. According to CNET, the beefing up of the 3G service should improve service quality in metropolitan areas. More cities will be added over the course of the year.
San Francisco?
Cross your fingers, although, SoMa has apparently seen some improvements, according to the guys over at Tech Crunch.
In Atlanta, customers will now see service improved by the addition of 540 cell sites that will operate with the existing ones to improve coverage and network capacity, certainly a great thing in a big city where service in general is sometimes less than adequate.
Seriously though, why on earth has it taken them this long to get this going? People in big cities have been craving this for a long time now.
Granted, it’s not the same for every single one, but if you took a sample of people in larger cities around the U.S., they would probably tell you that AT&T’s service was horrid, especially with iPhone’s.
We’ll see if anything changes.
Have you noticed a difference?

My AT&T signal is bad. I frequent many areas of the city with my ice cream cart and merrily ring my bell as I pass by potential customers. "¿Quieres una paleta?", I say, but nobody is around to hear me. I would use my iPhone to contact family to find out where the kids are so I can maximize my profits, but I can't get a call through. These dead zones are killing my ice cream cart business.
Ayudame AT&T!
Most amusing. At&T improving service? That's funny because in the north San Francisco bay area they're cutting it, see the story today in the pressdemocrat about how they've cut off some cell service in Sonoma County. Good thing I just bailed on my AT&T account and unlocked my iphone with Tmobile,'nuff said.
I think at&t should be ashamed of themselves. How dare they charge for services that include dropped calls? I have business associates who have a hard time leaving me a voice mail message. I'm a new customer to the Iphone and at&t and I now wish I'd never left Verizon.
