AT&T to force data plans with all smartphones starting next month

Bravo, AT&T, bravo. Not.

Well that was quick wasn’t it?

After only one day of great news coming from AT&T and their plan to makeover their 3G network, the service provider is back at it once again with a plan that surely is going to bring the ire of their customers.

This probably doesn’t rank higher on the problem meter than say lack of MMS for iPhone users, but it certainly will anger a broader range of people.

So what’s going on here?

Well in a report by Boy Genius Report via Gizmodo, on September 6th, AT&T is going to be forcing, the term optional is out the window folks, smartphone users that use their network into purchasing data plans. Now, if you don’t use data on your smartphone, you’re probably in the minority, but this is sure to affect plenty of you out there.

So much for the light at the end of the tunnel.

The only good news to come of this is that if you have a non-data plan with your smartphone and you purchased it before September 6th, you won’t be subject to AT&T’s tyranny. And yes, this is 100% confirmed to be happening, no buts about it.

AT&T’s thinking behind this move is to make sure that their customers have a more predictable bill each month.

Right.

It definitely has nothing to do with the fact that they want your money. Honestly, it would be totally fine if it weren’t so expensive but because it is literally forcing people to spend money that they don’t necessarily want to be spending is completely outrageous.

So if you were thinking about switching providers before, this might put you over the fence.

Two waves of the Stalin fist in AT&T’s direction.

Even if you buy a smart phone from a private party ATT will force you to pay a data plan. This is outlandish if you only use it for texting and phone use! It does not cost ATT any more for you to use this phone. I have 3 smart phones grandfathered in because I had them earlier, but if I didn't the total would cost me an extra $90 per month! That is just crazy! ATT is forcing you to pay more money just because you desire to use a certain type of phone! Maybe it is time to change carriers!
