Put this one into the rumor mill, because as of right now, it’s nothing more than information garnered from unknown sources but it is quite interesting nonetheless.

It appears that Apple and AT&T could possibly be releasing an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS for $99 at some point right before Christmas to compete with the Droid phones that are set to be released tomorrow.

Oh, they were officially announced today too, as if you didn't know already. Droid has been everywhere.

Anyway, the HTC Droid Eris, which is being released on Verizon, will cost a measly $99 after a $100 rebate and from the looks of things; it appears set for a great debut.

So, take this with a grain of salt, because it's just a rumor, but maybe Apple is getting scared that Droid might actually have a decent shot at cutting into their sales. They also know that dropping a 3GS model to this price would probably make a killing. So we’ll see what happens in the next month or two with that as all eyes are on tomorrow’s big release day.

It should be good.

I'm an Apple evangelist, but since arriving in the United States for three months I'm incensed to learn Apple are in bed with AT&T. Without which I have to hunt for an unlocked Apple. $99 is supposed to be cheap? On a two year plan --- I don't think so. Rethinking my relationship with Apple ...

Hrmm, I think it's very doubtful that AT&T would drop the price that much. That's a huge up front equipment hit ($) to take.

Allow the iPhone to be used on any network and you'll see real inovation and price declines across all platforms. Watch out Motorola, HTC, and Palm, when Apple arrives in Verizon and Sprint stores you will be forced to develop a decent product.

The same thing they did with the Mac they're doing with the iphone. Why won't apple open up its iphone to all providers? Let's not forget, the Max was a better computer computer. It's just the Windows was in all computers. It took them years to recover from Windows and when a decent copy of the iphone is in the market, no one will be looking to go with AT&T. I for one is waiting.
