Yes, the boys of Cupertino announced their new iPhone operating system today but that wasn’t everything they announced. In fact, Steve Jobs made everyone wait for a couple of minutes while he ran down a bunch of Apple numbers that truly are pretty staggering.
First and foremost, it looks like that projection that came out yesterday of more than 500,000 iPads sold and counting is completely off which should be a lesson on not believing third party sales figures. The official sales figure that Jobs released show over 450,000 iPads sold through today and I’m sure more than a few of you in San Francisco count yourselves among that statistic.
That ridiculous number wasn’t the only thing that he mentioned.
Apple has had 600,000 iBook downloads and 3.5 million iPad downloads through today. On the first day alone, iPad users downloaded over 1 million applications. That’s nuts, you guys have obviously been going crazy out there in SF and elsewhere.
I don’t blame you.
Apple has also sold 50 million iPhones. 50 million. And if you add in the iPod Touch? 85 million.
Wow.
This next one is just mind bending. To date, there have been 4.5 billion application downloads from the App Store. 4.5 billion, just let that one soak in for a second.
Crazy.
Since the iPad’s launch, Apple already has 3,500 iPad specific apps in the App Store and what has it been, less than a week?
I am currently shaking my head in complete disbelief. Now, I know I am tooting Apple’s horn a bit here but these numbers are deniably impressive and they surely are going to keep increasing especially when they release the iPhone HD and an iPhone on Verizon not to mention the iPad has been out less than a week. Oh and how about iAd? That's an absolute gold mine.
Apple should really think about holding an event thanking its customers in San Francisco that have helped them achieve these numbers while we suffered through AT&T’s horrible service.
Burgers and beer should suffice.
And if you really, really want to become a statistic yourself? Head down to your local Apple store, they'll welcome you with open arms.
