Apple releases iPhone 3.1 OS Beta

The 3GS should benefit greatly from OS 3.1.

Developers are surely scrambling to get their hands on this.

Apple released their newest iPhone operating system, 3.1 OS in Beta form today. All signs are pointing to a public release sometime in September, so developers are going to have a good amount of time to play around with the SDK.

If you missed some of the features that OS 3.1 may or may not include, you can find that information here. And if you don’t feel like clicking on the link, here is a quick summary:

OS 3.1 includes video editing that will allow you to keep a copy of your original film clip while saving an edited one. If you select and hold an application, as it wiggles, the phone itself will vibrate and lastly but not functioning, MMS buttons.

The other features include a faster boot time for the iPhone, updated modem firmware to 5.08.01, update AT&T profile to 4.2, and a couple of SDK/development functions that should please developers.

Last but not least and probably the most exciting, the voice control function now works over Bluetooth which, if probably drove those of you who extensively use the earpiece, crazy.

Of course, those are pretty general, so once developers get more hands on with the Beta, we should know a lot more about what to expect in the fall.

September looks like it is going to be a busy month for Apple if recent reports prove fruitful. The iPod Nano and the iPod Touch should be getting cameras and it is possible that they may be rolling out the much talked about Tablet.

And last but not least, Augmented Reality applications apparently will also be debuted with the release of OS 3.1.

We all know how secretive Apple is about release dates and what not, so we’ll see what actually transpires.

So, developers, head here and snag the SDK and OS 3.1 Beta and show us what you can do.
