The sales numbers keep on rising and it surely isn’t going to stop with the 3G enabled version of the iPad set for release later on this month. Steve Jobs is definitely inside a vault at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino throwing money around in slow-motion.
Well, that’s at least how I envision it.
The latest word on iPad sales doesn’t come from Jobs or Apple but from an online advertising network called Chitka which has been monitoring iPad sales since the launch date last Saturday. If you head here, you can see an escalating counter that apparently shows the estimated amount of iPads sold.
Chitka is making these estimates based on the number of unique iPads that are connecting to the ad network which, as BGR points out, actually might be more accurate than the numbers Apple released over the weekend stating that they had sold 300,000.
I find that kind of hard to believe but a steady flow of iPad sales since Saturday does make some sense and it’s only going to pick up at the end of the month.
Any of you out there in San Francisco going to be a iPad 3G statistic?
As of right now, Chitka is showing almost 517,000 iPads sold, impressive Cupertino, impressive. Well, if Chitka’s monitoring is correct.
What do you think?
Inflated numbers or accurate?

I would think there estimate is a little low, because I am sure there are iPads in boxes still waiting to be gifted.
Wow. That's a lot of wasted aid money for the homeless, or say victims of abuse. Kind of like how some people actually kill to have/sell one of these things.
Adam, Apple didn't say 300,00 'sold'. They said 'delivered'. The actual number sold was certainly higher because of 3G and other pre-orders that couldn't be delivered in time. Given Apple's notorious sandbagging on sales, a higher number wouldn't be a surprise since Apple likely wanted to meet the 200-300K estimates (skip the Piper Jaffrey last minute 700K estimate). I like Chitka's approach, but it is based on an estimate of their market penetration (they estimate 11% of the web) and that their customers represent the same places that iPad users are visiting. Not knowing who Chitka's customers are, there is no way to know whether their extrapolation process is accurate. (To be fair, I did read their exact information and they have tried hard.)
As for @Eric, I am sorry about whatever homeless/abuse situation that has affected you, but I don't see how buying a computer says that people don't want to support others.
@Dan in Washington:
Oh yeah, I'm sorry. You're totally right. What I meant to say was " What a complete shame it is that so many brainwashed idiots with too much money on their hands than they know what to do with are actually spending money on a device which, ethereally, is going to a 'man' who is, as Adam likely correctly put it 'is definitely inside a vault at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino throwing money around in slow-motion'".
Again, my apologies Dan
Found this in an article on the NYT:
I just want to know, what is this supposed to be used for? said Ebony White, 21, a child care worker in San Francisco who has discussed the iPad with her friends, all of whom have decided to pass. If I was going to spend that much money to buy something, it would just be a computer, because it costs just as much and it can do more things.
She added: Where am I supposed to use it? Am I supposed to use it on the bus and get robbed?
Got something to say?
