Alright ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the iPhone rumor mill and while this might be a bit of a stretch, it fits in perfectly with some of the rumored things going on with Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0, chiefly, the ability to have your contacts on the home screen.
So, let’s rewind a little bit, shall we?
A little while back, OS 4.0 features were leaked and frankly, they looked great. Some new syncing abilities for contacts, some sort of multi-tasking upgrade, multi-touch gestures for the entire phone and more. If you missed them, you can find the rest here.
Before that information was leaked, the big rumor was that you could move individual contacts to your home screen with some other stalker like features thrown in. In addition, if a contact is in close proximity to you, they too will show up on the home screen as an icon.
And that leads us to the newest rumor San Francisco, a feature about as creepy as the last.
According to Apple Insider, an Apple patent application has revealed that the company has something in the works that will allow you to share your current location with a contact at the press of a button.
Yes, that means if you get lost in the city after a long night at the bars, your separated friends could easily find you if you. Probably happens a lot around these parts, and chances are, someone else with you has an iPhone.
Anyway, here are the extensive details on the feature:
While the assisted GPS in the iPhone currently allows users to view their own location through the integrated Maps application, the described addition would make it simple and easy to share that data with someone else. The location data could be quickly shared with a person who is currently connected with a phone call, or with someone who was recently sent a text message.
The system would also allow users to actively send their location to another person, or to allow a user to request the location data of the other person, which would then require approval for security purposes.
Pretty nifty.
Now of course, it’s unconfirmed as to whether this is going to be rolled out with OS 4.0 but like I said, it would fit in nicely with the whole contact on the home screen feature so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a part of the upgrade. So yeah, it’s speculation, get over it.
Stay tuned San Francisco, your days of wandering Haight St. with no idea where your friends went could be over soon. And seeing as though the newest iPhone OS update just came out, a iPhone4G/OS 4.0 might be as soon as it gets.
