The latest numbers are out San Francisco and Google’s Android is making significant progress as far as the smartphone marketshare is concerned. A lot of you in SF are probably part of this Android revolution so go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back.
Between October and January, Google showed the best improvement over any of the smartphone platforms rising 4.3 points to reach a significantly higher 7.1 point share of the mobile market.
Meanwhile, Apple is at a standstill with a .03 gain over those same months; however, Jobs and the iPhone have nothing to worry about since they still are hovering at 25.2 percent of the market and a potential release of the iPhone 4G this summer will surely make those numbers skyrocket.
Not bad.
As far as RIM and Palm are concerned, the maker of the BlackBerry still sits atop the market after a 1.7 point gain which puts it at 43 percent of the market while Palm dropped 2.1 percent to 7.8 percent of the market. Sad days for webOS and Palm and they don’t look like they are getting any better especially with their debut on Verizon being a flop.
And last but not least, Microsoft also saw a drop of 4 percent but that’s because Windows Mobile 6.5 is out and not Windows Phone 7 series. Maybe we’ll see a boost when the HTC HD2 gets released this month.
So the real winner here seems to be Google and Android who have apparently been luring in customers left and right with an armada of phones on different networks including the Nexus One, Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, AT&T’s Backflip, the Motorola Devour and the upcoming HTC Desire on AT&T.
Of course that is just a rather large sampling.
