Verizon: Preparing for iPhone launch?

Verizon preparing for iPhone launch?

Verizon has unleased a series of commercials aimed at disgruntled AT&T users. Some believe Verizon - who may very well end up with the iPhone in 2010 - is preparing to lure iPhone lovers away from AT&T.

Others believe that the Verizon iPhone is nothing but hype since it would cost Apple a lot of money to build their device on CDMA platform, rather than GSM.

Apple would be very dumb to continue their exclusivity with AT&T. There are so many disgruntled AT&T customers who are moving on to other devices such as the Palm Pre and HTC Hero with Sprint. iPhones are great devices but not worth constantly pulling your hair out for due to dropped calls.

First, you are wrong that it would cost a great deal to build a CDMA version of the phone. There is very little invovled beyond switching out a gsm radio for a cdma one. If anything would cast doubt on a verizon iphone it would be that companies history of being unwilling to release control of phone content.

Indeed. If, in fact Verizon ever does get the iPhone, it will likely not be the iPhone we all know and love. Rather, it will probably be a viphone- stripped of all it's useful features (i.e.- WiFi), and full of Verizon junk (VZ Navigator, anyone?). I have two cellphones: one Verizon phone, and an AT&T iPhone. I love the Verizon network and LOVE my iPhone. Unfortunately, I think a happy marraige is just a dream...

    Dumb?

Dumb to have million of users buy iphones... and have AT&T pay Apple even MORE money for each phone sold?

Dumb to sell *BILLIONS* of apps?

    Very dumb?

I suspect Verizon is trying to get AT&T iPhone users to switch one of the Verizon Android phones that are expected to be released this year.

Things change. A lot of you are missing something from a great deal of press this week: ANDROID, OPEN PLATFORM. The big V is launching their app store probably December, which has been open to outside developers.

IT IS NOT A DUMB ARTICLE IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THE APPLE & CHINA UNICOM, DEAL FEATURES AN IPHONE MADE FOR CDMA IF YOU INVESTIGATE IT. THE CDMA IPHONE IS ALREADY IN THE WORKS BEING MADE FOR CHINA UNICOM.

Verizon's relationship with iPhone was announced several months ago in the main press. Where were you? As a customer thinking of switching to Verizon, I decided to wait until the iPhone deal goes through. Your article sounds like contrivance, rather than a fact-based investigation of the topic. Mac has been expecting to open its iPhone business to other companies, not necessarily giving up ATT, for much of 2009, so it's no big news.

@Patty - Wouldn't it be better for Apple to expand the market? DUH
