Performance
HTC includes a Qualcomm 528 Mhz processor in the Hero and the performance is decent, but not great. There is still some lag when opening and switching applications. The lag is expecially noticeable when the accelerometer doesn't work right away when browsing the Internet. However, we also found out that the lag decreases when closing all the unused background apps with a task manager that can be downloaded in the app store. Believe it or not, Android doesn't actually close all background applications when you exit them.
The HTC Sense system, built on top of the Android operating system, lets you create personal widgets and screens for your own personalization. This works very well, but the Hero would probably be a lot faster without all the memory that HTC Sense takes up.
Entertainment
Playing music on the HTC Hero is a decent experience with good sound. Playing videos, however, has not been a great experience, especially with MP4 files taken from our iPhone. The videos, with only 16 bit color, look less than average and the performance, even on a Class 4 Micro-SD card, is choppy. This doesn't appear to be a problem with the processor speed; the HTC Touch Pro, with the same exact processor, plays MP4 videos very well. Perhaps a software update can fix this in the future.
The HTC Hero comes with a 5 MP camera that takes worse pictures than some 3 MP cameras we have seen. The phone is able to take videos, but the quality is so poor that it renders this feature useless.

Memory use doesn't slow down a system, "expecially" when it's solid state.
dont trash the hero! he's obviously such an apple nerd
Just another lame news site that wants to expand their reader variety by included some clueless technology reviews about products they've never had experience with... Camera and camcorder are useless? Are you serious? LAME!
How is it that most other reviews and my personal experience with this phone has the exact opposit results. I would urge readers to look for other reviews online.
Download a task manager, kill the running background programs and you will notice a difference in performance. I have nothing against this phone...I own it!
"Their" should be a rule: one should not be allowed to write - "expecially" reviews - if one cannot even PROOFREAD.
