Palm Pre: Media takes a very long time to load

Palm Pre loads music and movies very slowly

We have been using the Palm Pre for over a week now and we still see a lot of strengths, including the web browser, the multi-tasking, and the beautiful screen (although there is light leaking at the bottom edge). However, when it comes to loading music or movies though iTunes or File Explorer, the Palm Pre is painfully slow.

The iPhone 3G is able to load a 700MB movie file in about a minute and fifteen seconds. The Palm Pre takes about two and a half minutes with the same exact file. You can use iTunes to sync your files but it’s not the same syncing experience on the iPhone.

The Palm Pre is aimed more towards business users than media users, so this shouldn’t be too much of a negative factor. Still, for people who use this phone for both media and business, the slow loading time is very painful and annoying.

A 700MB (megabyte) file could not possibly download on any U.S. wireless network in one or two minutes. In fact, using my Comcast 16Mbps (mega-bit-per second), it would take 4.4 minutes without speed boost.

AT&T and Sprint 3G networks are presently around 1.7Mbps (mega-BITS-per second), taking at least 35 minutes to download a 700MB file.

When AT&T introduces its 7.2Mbps broadband service, it would still take 9.7 minutes to download a 700MB file.

Actual wireless and wired broadband connections have an overhead of around 15%, lowering actual download speed. AT&T's GSM network is also hindered by high latency, further reducing performance.

Thanks, Brian. I never meant "download"...I meant "load" as in load through USB. It is slow but I'm sure it will improve with a hardware update.

Is it possible the Flash memory being used isn't as fast? Also I think you meant firmware or software update ;-) Although I'm sure a hardware update could improve the speed as well.

I have a hard time reading an article by a gadget guy who doesn't quite grasp the differences between loading and downloading, firmware and software, etc. Even CNET gets that stuff right.
