A recent press release from Barnes & Noble announced the bookseller's launch of the "world's largest eBookstore" that will offer eBooks compatible with a number of devices, including Plastic Logic's highly anticipated eReader that is scheduled to make its debut early in 2010.
With over 700,000 titles currently available, Barnes & Nobles expects the collection to grow to over one million offerings within a year. Although eBook prices vary at the new online store, it's clear that the plan is to compete directly with Amazon's pricing structure and try to offer as many titles as possible at $9.99 or less.
If you're an eBook fan, this is a good time to check out the new store. With the free download of the Barnes & Noble eReader application and a B&N account (also free), you also get six free eBooks including Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary and several classic titles. In addition to the PC/Mac version of the application, Blackberry and iPhone/iPod Touch versions are also available.

Application is rubbish - the 6 free books are 'classics' and nothing I feel a need to have. Better off with the kindle reader and paying for the e-books. the "flip" technique for turning pages suffers from a decent amount of lag - overall, poor quality. Plus, while I know it's new, the catalog of books is difficult to access/browse - you can search an individual title easily enough, but what if I want to window shop what's available in e-book form? Can't be done from the B and N mobile site.
Rubbish I tells you.
