In case you’re not familiar with Boxee, you might want to refer back part one of the article. In this section, we’ll be going through the process of getting Boxee up and running on an OS X machine and an Ubuntu 8.10 machine. Both of the install processes are surprisingly simple.
Step 0: Sign up for an account.
To install and use Boxee, you have to sign up for an account. Its completely free and the form is pretty brief.
For OS X:
Step 1: Login and download the latest installer for OS X.
Step 2: Double click the dmg file.
Step 3: After the dmg file is mounted, double click the installer.
Step 4: Run Boxee from your Applications folder.
For Ubuntu:
Step 1: Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources.
Step 2: In Third-Party Software, click Add and type in: deb http://apt.boxee.tv intrepid main
Step 3: Open up the command line and type: sudo apt-get install boxee.
Step 4: Run Boxee by going to Applications -> Sound & Video -> Boxee.
Once you have Boxee running, click ‘Add user’ and enter in your information. Now that you’re logged in, its time to start adding media. Hit left arrow key to bring up the left hand menu and select ‘Video’. Choose ‘Browse’, then ‘Add Source’. From here you can add local and network directories that contain your videos. This process can be repeated for both music and photos.
For adding media from content providers such as Revision3, start out by opening the left hand menu and go to ‘Settings’. Choose ‘Applications’, and then select whatever applications you want to add. When you’re done, go back to the left hand menu and open up ‘Videos’. Select ‘Internet’, and you should see all of the applications you just added.
Now that you have Boxee setup, you can start enjoying all your media in one location. Stay tuned for part three of this article where I’ll give my impressions of using Boxee and whether it can supplant my current media software.
