Microsoft's new Zune HD looks to join the touch party
With a 3.3 inch touchscreen and 16:9 OLED display, Microsoft is taking aim at the iPod Touch market with the upcoming Zune HD. Fans of the Zune media player will still find the features they're used to along with some new additions that should make this a welcome upgrade.
The Zune HD will come with an integrated HD radio receiver, allowing the user to access a variety of HD programming at no additional cost. The Zune website notes that you will be able to tag the songs you like for later purchase (via the Zune Marketplace).
In a Wi-Fi hotspot? The Zune HD will allow you to surf the net as well as connect, update, and purchase content on the go. No need to wait until you get home to buy the song you just heard. Get it right away.
High Definition TV shows and movies (720p) will play on your home HDTV via the available AV dock (sold separately). Now you can take your favorite movie or show with you and watch on the Zune HD.
While there is no word on the hard drive size, one would expect it to be large in order to hold HD media files.
As a current owner of a Zune - you can count me in when this new incarnation arrives in the Fall.

its time to kick ipod $!@
THIS IS THE BEST MP3 PLAYER EVER SO FAR IN THE WORLD ITS THE FIRST WITH HD RADIO AND TEGRA
Standalone music players are so last decade. Seriously, what's the point microsoft. Make an all in one device like the iPhone. At the very very least make an app store, give Zune WiFi/3G so you can download files, vidoes, games, movies and music from the App Store wirelessly.
So one wants just a standalone music/video player that does little else anymore. We want an all in one device that we can do everything we need to with, from recording video to making phone calls, to GPS, to downloading music and movies and watching them right then and there. But I guess being behind the curve is what microsoft is all about.
wikoogle is a weirdo. He's hitting up every website with an article about the Zune HD and leaving the exact same lame comment. He's one of those Apple-bots obviously- LOL.
wikoogle - if that were the case, then why are ipods and other mp3 players so popular? While the iPhone is nice, I can't imagine the battery life would allow for constant music playing during an 8-hour work day (unless was plugged in). In my years of owning a Zune, I have never had to recharge during the day. All-in-one devices are nice, if you have the cash to shell out - but when I want to listen to music, I don't really need all the bells and whistles of apps and phones and the like. Give me a solid music player and I'm happy. I have a cell phone to make calls on.
WTH wikigoogle, get a life! I saw you post on cnet too, you broken record!
The only think that I may have a problem with is hard drive space. Does anyone know how many GB the Zune Touch is going to have?
Demetrius - I can't imagine that they would make a run at the iPod touch, and then wimp out by putting a small drive inside. My guess would be, at minimum, 120G.
