It's sew free

I have always wanted to know how to sew. I see all of these extra cute pillow covers in the stores that I’d love to have but they always seem a little overpriced. And when I find a great pair of slacks in the mall on super clearance, it pains me to put them back because the cost of tailoring them would no longer make them a great bargain.

I had a friend give me a lesson on some basics once, but when I went home to practice on my own, I got into a fight with the bobbin…and I lost. My Sewing Genie went back into the closet and has been there ever since. So I’m essentially back to knowing nothing about sewing.

I looked into sewing lessons at some local fabric stores but never got around to actually signing up. Then recently, I found out about this wonderful sewing program called DC Threads which offers a FREE Sewing Lounge the second Saturday of each month. I had to read the email twice…did that say FREE? YES!

DC Threads is an organization that fosters the art and craft of sewing and encourages people to learn about and share their love for the needle and thread. Whether you’ve never picked up a thimble or have been sewing for years, DC Threads is a great organization to get involved with.

From the DC Threads website:

“DC Threads Sewing Lounge is a program sponsored by the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. It is held on the second Saturday of every month and provides an opportunity for anyone interested in sewing—from beginners to experts—to share sewing tips, learn new techniques, and even work on projects together with sewing machines available on site.”

As a participant, you bring your fabric, notions, and ideas and they will supply the sewing machines, thread, scissors, measuring tape, and assistance. And did I mention…it’s FREE?? They even have a project of the month in case you don’t know what you want to sew.

Since this is the year of change, you can also learn about DC Threads’ Stitchin’ for Change program, which involves special sewing projects that would benefit various causes, like sewing caps for children undergoing chemotherapy or sewing pillows for homeless shelters.

DC Threads is a great organization that helps you to learn a craft and help the community…for FREE.

This month’s DC Threads Sewing Lounge will meet on Saturday, March 14th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at North Michigan Recreation Center, 1333 Emerson St., NE, Washington, DC 20017.
