The ReHarvest Center - Great option for home improvement shoppers

This week while researching the use of recycled building materials to do frugal and environmentally responsible home improvements, I got acquainted with a great couple who have become “pros” in the art of re-building using salvaged materials. Norm and Ann purchased an older house out by Gig Harbor that was badly in need of renovation. Being strongly in favor of recycling and reducing waste, they have made a hobby of discovering and reusing building materials. Although they are still in the process, they estimate about 75% of their remodeling has been done with salvaged materials. Although Norm claims his “retirement” is really more like “tired-ment” , they were plenty energetic and willing to share some of their favorite sources for recycled materials with me.

One of Ann and Norm’s favorite haunts is the Reharvest Center. Hidden down in the tide flats of Tacoma, this non-profit organization is managed by the Metropolitan Development Council of Tacoma. ReHarvest’s mission is to encourage “the rebuild, reuse and recycle elements of waste stream reduction by dismantling buildings and salvaging reusable product.” Managed by Barb Garcia and staffed by some of the nicest folks around, this building in packed full of interesting finds and reusable stuff salvaged from old structures. Their prices are outstanding and the entire place is just FUN to explore! From beautiful stained glass windows, to gas fireplaces, appliances and whirlpool tubs (new and donated) , the selection is eclectic and daily changing. I found a marvelous retro 1950’s pull down lamp that had to come home with me… I definitely recommend this store for anyone with a little curiosity and a sense of adventure!

The ReHarvest Center is located at 1113 St Paul Ave, Tacoma 98421. It is a challenge to find but you can get a map from their website. They are open Monday – Thursday 8am-4pm and Friday 8am-3pm, closed on weekends and holidays. The phone number is 253-531-5845. You can call Barb or one of the other folks there and ask if you are looking for something specific. One of my favorite things about shopping here is that they do not charge sales tax. All profits go back into the Tacoma community and this program to create jobs and reduce what goes into our landfills. Donations are tax deductable. They also offer Deconstruction services, done by hand using small tools, which are competitively priced and environmentally responsible. Call Barb for more information and a quote on these services.
