If you are looking to save on your electric bill, try using a clothes line instead of your dryer. Set up a clothes line outside in a sunny spot, and hang clothes to dry in the sun. Not only do they get a great, fresh smell, but using a clothes line saves you tons of money on your electric bill and is great for the environment. I love the fresh smell of clothes off the line!
The average family can save $80 per year on their electric bill using a clothes line, and save $508 over 5 years. The earth will thank you too. Replacing use of your dryer with a clothes line will reduce your household carbon dioxide emissions by 1,247 pounds per year. (Assuming you use your dryer four hours per week. The savings will be more significant if you are using your dryer more than four hours each week. Information from www.sierraclub.org) Note that this is the "official" statistic. I would argue that the savings are more. Last year we did not have a dryer for about 6 months, and dried exclusively on a clothes line (one inside and one outside.) When we got our dryer and started drying clothes our electric bill went up about $30 per month, so for us the savings using a clothes line are about $360 per year.
Even if you don’t hang all your clothes, it’s still a great way to trim a little off your electric bill and do something great for the environment. If you can’t wrap your mind around the idea of doing laundry outside, start with a small drying rack in your house. One like this can be set up in your basement or in a spare room. Use it to dry lighter items, like t-shirts and cotton clothing, and use the dryer just for thick, heavier clothing items.
Try hanging just one or two loads a week and build up to more. You’ll see the savings add up and know you’re doing something great for the environment. I agree, Katie! I don't hang my clothes outside, but I have a rack that my daughter-in-law gave me that I use in my laundry room to hang clothes on. Not only are the savings significant, but clothes last MUCH longer when you dry them this way compared to in the dryer.
