The sweet taste of an icy cold fruit smoothie on a hot day can hit the spot, but some consumers may be at risk of it hitting their stomachs instead. Goya Foods, a popular producer of Spanish, Mexican and Hispanic foods has just announced that 14 ounce packages of Mamey Pulp may have been contaminated with Salmonella.
These recalled products were sold and distributed in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.
The upc number of the recalled Goya Mamey Pulp is 041331090803.
Symptoms of Salmonella include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. If you have consumed a recalled product and have concerns about your health you are advised to seek the attention of a health professional. For children, the elderly and those who have a weakened immune system, Salmonella can lead to kidney problems and be very serious.
In a random test in Nevada one package of Goya Mamey pulp tested positive for Salmonella.
This is not Goya's first brush with a recall. In 2009 the company pulled dried yellow potato due to a labeling issue. Although Goya's website does not list any recall information consumers can view the FDA's release here.
If you purchased any of this recalled fruit pulp you are advised to throw the product away. You can call Goya's consumer line for a refund at 1-800-275-4692. The phone line is manned Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm EDT.
