Living in St. Louis in the winter is so bitter cold, even when there isn't snow on the ground. Sometimes it's not even fun to go outside for more than a moment. Big cities, like St. Louis are often known for their expensive cost of living, which includes family activities, which collectively with the weather, make it less likely that anyone will be leaving their house during the bitter cold winter months. But being in St. Louis doesn't mean that everything has to cost money or be expensive, nor does it mean you have to stay home all winter, trying to keep warm with nothing to do.
There are dozens of free things to do in the St. Louis Metropolitan area that are fun, educational or perfect for a family outing. They are all indoors or partially indoors and open all year long.
The St. Louis Science Center is free to wander about looking at the exhibits, displays and activities. It is geared to children of all ages, and it is great fun for adults too. The Science Center is not like your typical museum, they want everyone to touch, touch again and learn, all at the same time. Fun, educational experiences are abundant throughout the three stories of jam packed displays, that are all hands on. From building a bridge with giant foam blocks to learning about prehistoric creatures through true-to-life display, this is a great place to take the family on a cold winter day, and will easily provide a full day of entertainment.
The St. Louis Zoo is also free to get in, and is also open in the winter. There are several different animal houses that are indoors and warm, with the exception of the penguin house, which is kept colder to mimic their natural habitats, but is definitely a must see. Getting between houses is going to be a colder experience, as there is walking involved out in the elements to get from one house to the next. For the most part, the houses are centered in one area, so moving between them won't be too terrible, but be sure and bundle up if you do visit. Still, the St. Louis zoo is a free place to spend a couple of hours, and in winter time, you should definitely check out the butterfly house. It is one of the best places to be in the colder months, nice and warm, just like a butterflies natural habitat.
St. Louis also has a beautiful, art museum that is free. This is another perfect family outing where most of the museum is highly educational but interesting. Admission to the building is free, and there are tickets available for other exhibits, though their cost is minimal and provides an additional array of educational experiences that are so interesting, nobody will realize that they are learning. The St. Louis Art Museum has been undergoing several changes and an expansion, but remains open during all construction. Plan your trip for a Friday and all paid exhibitions are free to everyone.
Also, be sure to check out your local church and area community centers for other low cost or free programs, activities and events. Many of these locations are focused on bringing families together and they recognize the need for free or low cost events. There is no reason to stay home all winter long, there are plenty of free activities to keep you coming back for more.
