Getting a dog can be a happy moment for a family, but it can also be expensive. Here are some tips for adding a four-legged friend to your family without breaking the bank.

Get a Small Dog

Tiny dogs eat less and families can save on food costs for them. Buying dog food at a large retailer like Walmart or Target (or bulk store like Sam’s or Costo), rather than a pet specialty store will also save money.

Adopt a Pet from the Pound or Human Society

While you do pay anywhere from $75 and up for a dog from the Human Society, the dogs come micro-chipped, spayed and neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and tested for heartworm. You also get a free vet exam and a 30-day gift of ShelterCare Pet Insurance. If you’re interested in a specific breed, such as French bulldog or pug, you can pick one up at a discounted cost from a rescue pound.

Petco PALS Card

Petco has a frequent buyer program, called PALS, that gives you money back when you purchase programs, food, or toys. When your purchases reach a certain amount, you get a coupon via email off your next visit. They also have a buy 10, get 1 bag of food free program.

1-800-Pet-Meds

Buying pet medication online can save you hundreds of dollars per year. Ask your vet to give you a subscription and then mail it to Pet Meds after placing your order online. The meds are then mailed directly to your home.

Keep Dog’s Teeth Clean

Taking care of your dog’s teeth can be expensive, but with proper care doggie dental bills can be completely avoided. Feed your dog dry food only, limit treats, and check with your vet for healthy treats such as carrots, which are inexpensive and healthy.
