Half Price Books is a great value already, offering discounted books, CDs, LPs, video games, and movies. But frugal shoppers can reap even more savings with a few simple strategies.
Sign Up for Half Price Books eNewsletter
Periodically throughout the year, Half Price Books will send out news about sales or offer discount coupons through their eNewsletter. The emails often have coupons that save anywhere from 30 to 50 percent, and are mailed only to their exclusive list. Half Price doesn't spam or send emails too frequently to be annoying. Just by signing up, you get a 30 percent coupon as a reward.
Sell Books Back to Half Price
While selling books to Half Price doesn't get the return it once did, there is still money to be made from your old books, CDs, and movies. Books that are rare, exclusive editions, or advanced copies seem to get more of a return than current bestsellers. If you're done reading your books and don't want them to collect dust, this can be a good way to get a few extra bucks in your pocket, or to use as credit in the store.
Get the Half Price Books Calendar
Every year Half Price has a calendar available in their store which offers valuable coupons throughout the entire year. The calendar is free and has coupons located in the back. Free calendar plus savings? That's a good deal.
Watch for Overstocks
Much like other bookstores, Half Price gets overstock merchandise from time to time, which can garner several dollars in savings. Books and DVDs are most frequently the types of things to fall under this discount, and they are easy to find in the store as they are usually on a cart right in front.
Educator or Librarian Discounts
If you're a teacher or librarian in the Milwaukee area, you can receive a special 10 percent savings on everything in the store. Half Price Books offers an Educator's Discount Card especially for you.
Location of Milwaukee-Area Half Price Books Stores
Milwaukee has three Half Price Books locations: Brookfield (soon to be moving to the V. Richards Plaza), Greenfield (in the Greenfield Place shopping center), and Milwaukee (in the Highland Plaza shopping center on Brown Deer Road.)

Hi Cherie! Excellent article. May I be the first to congratulate you on your news channel, Milwaukee Frugal Examiner. In today's economy, this is a must have read for everyone. Congratulations! -Dusty
Aw, shucks. You're too kind! Thank you for commenting. I think I'd be frugal no matter how much money I had, but since I don't have a lot that makes being frugal a (fun) challenge, too.
