UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that 20-year-old college student and Chicago native, Firas Alkhateeb, originally created the Obama/Joker image and posted it to his Flickr account. He claims no credit for the poster distribution campaign or the "socialism" subheading.
For weeks, portraits of Barack Obama mocked up to look like the Joker and subheaded with the word "socialism" have seemingly appeared out of thin air in major metropolitan cities across the US.
Now, they have a discernible point of origin: Alex Jones, the right-wing, born-again radio host and filmmaker behind such conspiracy theory-centric documentaries as America Wake Up or Waco, Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement and The Obama Deception (the latter of which compares the President's ascent to power to that of Adolph Hitler).
On August 7th, Jones's Infowars.com homepage went live with news of $1000 video contest for those willing to participate in their viral anti-Obama/anti-New World Order/anti-Socialism/anti-Communism campaign. Says the site:
In order to awaken the people about Obama’s agenda, Alex is organizing a contest centered around the “Obama as Joker” poster that has Democrats and Obamanoids going ballistic.
Go to Infowars and download the posters, print them out, and put the posters up in public spaces around your town. Make sure to use a poster with Infowars displayed. Create a video of your poster offensive and post it on YouTube...and we will choose the best for the contest. Make sure to include “Obama Joker $1000 Video Contest” in the email subject line.
Contest winner prizes:
First Place: $1000
Second Place: $500
Third Place: $200

Said posters also now come with three other mix-and-match messages in lieu of the "socialist" tag: "new world order," "fascism" and "infowars.com." (All of which are available as t-shirts through the site's online boutique for $19.95.) A piece entitled "Obama as Joker Explained," by Infowars contributor, Kurt Nimmo, shines a light on the rationale behind the somewhat confusing and obtuse comparison:

Bob Kane’s original comic book Joker is a master criminal and a bizarre psychopath. Obama is not necessarily a psychopath — that is to say a ruthless hands-on serial killer — but by the standard of his office he is a master criminal, or rather a front man for a cartel of master criminals.
In 2009, the office of the president is nothing if not a wholly owned subsidiary of the international bankers. In fact the whole of Congress is owned by the banksters and their corporate minions, a fact the liberals consistently miss or are incapable of understanding mostly because many of them are beholden to foundations established by the same bankster elite.
Meanwhile, a man in Clermont, Florida has just been arrested for plastering his town with more than 500 of the posters in hopes of winning the contest. Undoubtedly, the Clermont Police Department is just another arm of the "bankster elite" hydra (groans).

It’s about “Cap and Trade” (a huge tax on American prosperity) It’s about “Printing Money” (another huge tax on American prosperity) Its about “Sotomayor” (a liberal activist judge who will legislate from the bench and attack the 2nd amendment) It’s about the “Cash for Clunkers” (absolute waste of taxpayer dollars). Of course the author has to make this a "left/right" issue instead of ignoring the damage Obama's administration has done. Obama has done NOTHING but extend the Bush agenda. For example, this year he'll have upped the Afghan troop level by 75,000 US SOLDIERS. Oh and btw- author- get your facts straight, no one was arrested in Florida for putting up anti-NWO posters, one person was questioned, and it was for putting it on a piece of FEDERAL property (mailbox).

You incorrectly describe Alex Jones as "right-wing." The problem with this label is that it presumes that Jones has any ideological core. In fact, Jones is capable of allying himself with the far-left or the far-right; it's wherever the bucks are.
