Another way to work

Job Fairs, classifieds, http://craigslist.com or http://idealist.org are all great resources to new career opportunities especially during these tough economic time.  Even recent college graduates are finding it challenging. Last week 1,000 young people showed up and passed out resumes at Campus Philly's annual Opportunity Fair. Last year, one in five college grads found jobs right away. But this year it's up to one in four so things may be getting better. http://campusphilly.org director of employer partnerships Alethia Calbeck said, "It's getting better, the number of companies at the fair this year are hiring more than the companies that came last year. In all, the 53 companies are hiring 30 people." WOW! Which is a nice way of saying that 1,000 young people showed up for 30 jobs.

However, in today's economy it may be a good idea to explore some non-traditional methods.  For example, The City of Philadelphia, in partnership with the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board and the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation, officially launched Way to Work Philadelphia!. This program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Health and Human Services, aims to help provide eligible individuals with subsidized employment experiences. Way to Work Philadelphia! will  last through September 30, 2010, when federal funding will end. Positions created by the program must pay at least minimum wage but can pay much more, with Way to Work Philadelphia! subsidizing wages up to $13 per hour. Jobs must employ workers between 25 and 40 hours of work per week. This program cannot be used to fill positions behind laid off employees, displace current employees or impede promotional opportunities

“This program is another important tool on our road to full economic recovery,” said Sallie A. Glickman, CEO of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, the organization responsible for overseeing Philadelphia’s program.
There are program requirements, but for someone who has been out of work , way to work could be  good alternative, even for the summer. To  see if you are eligible visithttp://waytoworkphilly.org.
