Take out your eye patches and wooden legs! French people can now vote for a “Pirate” political party. Well, not all French people exactly. The élection législative partielle taking place in the Yvelines département located west of Paris on September 20th and 27th bears a mysterious “Parti Pirate” on its ballot. The lucky mateys will vote for the replacement of one of their député (French member of the Assemblée Nationale). The Parti Pirate aims to defend the rights of Internet users, and the liberation of culture and its free access for all. They also call for a rethinking of commercial licenses that currently favor unfair monopolies.

Candidate Maxime Rouquet explains that the French government uses the threat of terrorism and pedophilia to spy on our Internet activities. He also argues that while the access to culture should be made easier thanks to the technological advances of our time, the Parliament prefers to side with the companies who restrict it, when the Parliament's priority should be to defend its citizens:
“Notre gouvernement veut contrôler, surveiller, ficher les citoyens. La lutte contre le terrorisme ou la pédophilie est une cause juste, mais elle sert de prétexte à des lois préparées pour permettre à l’Etat de violer la vie privée des français en toute impunité, en installant des logiciels espions sur leurs ordinateurs... Sur le sujet de l’accès à la culture, la législation actuelle accumule les valeurs rétrogrades au lieu de s’adapter aux nouveaux moyens de diffusion... Aujourd’hui, alors qu’il est devenu possible de diffuser une œuvre culturelle à des millions d’êtres humains pour un coût négligeable, les sociétés qui ont le monopole de la distribution des supports physiques tentent de défendre leur contrôle au lieu de s’adapter aux nouveaux moyens de communication. Il n’est pas normal que le Parlement les soutienne et légifère en mettant en péril les droits des citoyens pour défendre un système obsolète.”

There are a few other pirate parties throughout Europe in Germany, Great Britain and Sweden. The Swedish pirate party “Piratpartiet” has already won a legislative seat during the last European elections!
Will Versailles, capital city of Yvelines and home of the famous French monarchs Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, see pirate flags flying from the roof of the royal palace in the near future?
